In Fahrenheit, the dystopian world is negatively affected by technology and even began to replace nature with technology. One example is seashells. Mildred Montag likes blocking out the real world so often times she relies on her seashells to block out others as was described by Bradbury, “And in her ears the little Seashells...” (Bradbury #). Seashells are little ear radios almost like headphones, but they take technology like this and give it names of objects in nature. This is turning their world into a technology based world. Nature is slowly disappearing right in front of their eyes. Another example of this is the mechanical hound. As the fire company owns a mechanical hound for protection yet it is not living, as Bradbury states, “The mechanical hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the firehouse” (Bradbury #). The mechanical hound is replacing a guard dog with technology and is showing the flaws in it. All of this replacement is having a negative impact on the character’s mental health. They do not clearly see the issues with all the replacements being made and the amount of electronics being used. The world in Fahrenheit does not truly know what life would be like without technology.

Technology is linked to many mental issues such as focus issues, self- acceptance issues, depression, and anxiety. Mental health is a person’s well-being in consideration to their psychological and emotional state. The use of social media increases the chance of acquiring mental issues such as eating disorders, self- worth issues and even conditions such as ADHD,

a study shows that adolescents who use electronics are more likely to show symptoms of ADHD than teens who use technology on an excessive daily basis (Duke Today). As there are many downfalls to technology, teens who don’t use technology for a period of time have shown more regular signs of depression and anxiety. So in consideration to that fact, technology is acceptable in moderation. Technology is advancing and even though technology is one of the leading causes to mental health issues, there is computer- based mediations to prevent or treat mental illness such as schizophrenia, minimal types of depression and anxiety, and emotional trauma(National Institute of Mental Health). Emotional trauma is shown in Fahrenheit, even though the firefighters don’t show they are hurt, it is obvious that they are traumatized by what they are forced to do. It is very common that the mentally ill don’t get the help they need, fifty percent of the mentally ill don’t receive the treatment they need (Mental Illness Policy Org.). When not receiving help the illness gets worse. Mental illness is like a broken bone, if you don’t get help now it will never get better. Untreated mental illness is a very big part of Fahrenheit and is a big connection to the real world. Many are ashamed of their mental issues, so they go without getting help, and even the smallest comments could push them over the edge. This unfortunately ends, more than likely, in suicide.

In the book, the author talks about rules and orders. Very strict rules can affect a person’s mental health in very drastic ways. An example of this is when Bradbury states the first rule introduced, which states that no one is allowed to own books. This is shown when Montag is explaining to Mildred how horrid this burning was saying she will never understand the horrific scenes, “There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman to stay in a burning house; there must be something there.”(Bradbury 48). With the “no books” rule comes a lot of issues, when civilians are found with books the Firefighters have to burn the books, sometimes their houses full of books, which means sometimes people are killed in the fires. The stressers from this job are severe. Montag has many sleepless nights, he stays up thinking of the burnings like the one he is talking about to Mildred. Listening to his dialogue shows how truly hurt he is. As shown when Montag and Clarrise were talking about firefighting Montag says “You never wash it off completely.”(Bradbury 37). This quote is referring to kerosene, which is fuel used to set fires, Montag is saying it will always haunt him. After meeting Clarrise, he realized that he and his co-workers have lost humanity. These actions will forever scar Montag and the other firefighters.

When a person is under a severe amount of stress their mental state begins to become impaired, but also their physical health. Some mental illnesses that stem from stress are mood disorders including depression and anxiety. Physical illnesses that root from stressful situations are obesity, heart issues, cancer, weakened immune system, and diabetes. Studies have proven that sixty six percent of people who experience stress also show physical symptoms, and sixty three percent experience psychological issues (PsychCentral). Very strict rules and emotionally draining and scarring actions will amount to severe amounts of stress, which Montag experienced. Rules are everywhere and will always be a part of life, but extreme rules or forcing others to do what they do not feel comfortable with is what causes the severe amounts of stress and anxiety. When stress increases the suicide rates increases as well as self- harming rates, in a school in Britain forty- six percent of teachers knew of kids self- harming themselves. Also the LGBTQ+ community has reported to have higher stress levels. The earlier the stress starts the more likely the individual is to acquiring health conditions as stated before. Many adults find family responsabilites a big stresser, such as financial issues, or when family members have severe illness such as cancer (American Psychological Association). When dealing with mental illness individuals usually think stress has nothing to do with their physical and emotional problems. The individual could be put into a behavioral examining unit like suggested in Mental Health, “The justification for asylums appeared self- evident: they benefited the community, the family, and the individual by offering effective psychological and medical treatment….” (Grob 144). Any illness, whoever the person, should not be ignored and taken seriously.

A big part of the book is when Ray Bradbury writes about Clarrise and how she is mentally ill. Clarrise from the dystopian worlds society could be considered “crazy” or “mentally disturbed”. This is shown when Clarrise and Montag are in the street the first time they met “I’m still crazy. The rain feels good. I love to walk in it.” (Bradbury 8). Society has painted a picture in Clarrise’s mind and just because she is different from what society says she is considered “crazy”. Clarrise likes to be outside and do things out of the ordinary. An example of this is when Montag and Clarrise are outside and Clarrise picks a dandelion and rubs it under Montag’s chin “What a shame, she said. “You’re not in love with anyone.” (Bradbury #). Clarrise shows just how corky she actually is by rubbing a flower under their chins saying it will tell if they are in love or not. People in society look at Clarrise as weird and “crazy” because of her personality. Societies tend to paint impossible expectations and Clarrise decided not to give attention to that and be herself. No matter how much judgement she received she never stopped being herself. Clarrise questioned Montag and his happiness, this let him open up and realize how messed up his society is. Montag learns the true meaning of caring. Everyone needs to find a their own Clarrise.

Finding someone who actually cares about you increase your mood and is shown to help with physical factors. Healthy relationships are proven to speed up healing time, lower your blood pressure, lessen your chances of a relapse of depression, and decrease anxiety episodes. Relationships create a reason to get out of bed for the mentally ill, they finally feel like they have a purpose (Canopy Health). This is shown in Fahrenheit, after Montag and Clarrise met he realizes so much about himself he didn’t know. A healthy relationship is composed of seven things: mutual symbiotic, respect, transparentness, support, encouragement, the ability to forgive, and comfort and security. Mutually symbiotic means that the relationship is benefiting both individuals. Respect treat each other rightfully and with dignity, treat them how you would want to be treated. Being transparent, means to be open and clear when communicating. Support one another, be there for them and support their endeavors. Encouragement give them confidence not criticism inspire hope not hate. Forgive be understanding that no one is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, communicate to resolve problems. Lastly, provide them with comfort and security create a sense of ease and well being (Healthy Place). All of these steps are what help create a healthy relationship, which increases moods. A healthy, strong relationship is proven to help with mental illness.
