So, while the crisis is currently ongoing, it seems that it may be lessening in the future. Pennsylvania is one of eight states that will have an excess of nurses by 2030 but will also have the highest demand for nurses in the country.

Her actions directed the course of nursing to the modern profession that it is today.

During the Civil War, the need for professional training and education was realized to address this need nursing schools were established. These schools continue to educate and provide nurses into the present. In addition to nursing schools, it was realized that advocacy and leadership were necessary by advocating for the veterans' nurses to be able to provide quality care to the patients. This was initiated by Clara Barton, who established the American Red Cross to advocate for veterans to receive proper care. Also, holistic care was recognized as necessary not just for treating physical ailments, but also for addressing emotional and physical trauma. Modern nursing continues incorporating mental health into the health care provided.

The foundation that was set up in the Civil War is still a guiding force today and has set the path that nurses would follow.
