A writing goal that I set at the beginning of the semester was to be exposed to writing styles that I have no experience in. I wanted to explore the different types of writing because I have only ever written 5-paragraph essays in the past. I feel like I have achieved this goal since I wrote timed writings, a research paper, and a script for a short film. Keeping up with the class’s timeline and not being behind was crucial for my success, especially since writing is very time-consuming, in my opinion. However, at times, I was behind, so I tried my best to catch up as soon as possible. A writing skill that I believe I improved the most is creative writing, which was demonstrated in my script, because it allowed me to explore my creativity in a way that I had never before. The most significant challenge I faced was when I was behind in completing my research paper after I missed school for nearly a month. It was challenging because I wanted my final paper to be perfect, but having work continuously piling up, I did not want to keep dragging one assignment. Receiving feedback from peers, instructors, and myself greatly helped polish my writing, leading to a better final product. I particularly appreciated the writing workshop for our script because I gained feedback from the entire class. I always approach revising and editing as something that will improve my writing, though it is a rather boring process. For example, I read through my entire final research paper, which was almost twenty pages, right before turning it in, and it helped me clarify my paper overall. Depending on my audience, purpose, and genre, I think my writing has differed from formal to casual, so I think it is essential to understand those factors before writing. Always connecting back to the broader idea or question helped me easily incorporate research and evidence into my writing, especially in the research paper. I think that my personal writing style and voice are still developing, and that it does not have a distinct style yet. I certainly feel more confident as a writer because I have more experience in writing in various styles, and I hope to widen my experience in the future.

Artifact: Initial Research Question

This artifact involves developing questions that encourage curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking, connecting directly with generating inquiry. I created three initial research questions: What jobs will be replaced by AI or robots in the next 30 years? What jobs can never be replaced by AI/robots? I initially had more questions on a wide variety of topics. This was the very first step of the research paper, so asking questions about something that I am genuinely curious and passionate about was crucial since this is something that would stick with me for a couple of months.

This artifact involves annotating and analyzing six scholarly, peer-reviewed sources that are found in Google Scholar. In the annotated bib, the first part summarizes the study, and the second part discusses the relevance and connects to the broader idea. All the sources were critically read through and analyzed. This step helped me use a variety of sources and organize my thoughts. It also felt like I was reading a preview of my research paper since some of the topics were very closely related to mine.

This artifact involves and shows the ability to navigate different research genres because it includes formal writing, annotated bibliography, data analysis and report, and discussion and conclusion. These writings all address the same main question: What jobs will be replaced by AI or robots? The research paper needed attention to clear structure and evidence since it was a genre that required a formal writing style, demonstrating my ability to write in a scholarly format.

This artifact involved a discussion with the entire class about our script. I gave and received feedback from my peers, which helped improve my final script because I considered and learned from the critics I received. Reading other people’s scripts also helped me view from a reader’s perspective and understand what is more and less engaging to the readers regarding clarity and enjoyment. During the discussion, I was also able to ask my peers questions about the parts that I was unsure about. I recall receiving overall positive feedback, which motivated me to keep going.

This artifact involves reviewing multiple primary and secondary sources on my specific topic. My primary source was an interview with someone in the tech field, and my secondary sources were scholarly articles. I made claims by looking back at the key points from my annotated bibliography and data analysis to interpret their relevance, meaning, and findings to my research question, drawing a conclusion. I interpret different materials by discussing perspectives from both primary and secondary sources.
