A series of fortunate events … Two of our young carers, B &S were involved in Future U programme focused on supporting young carers to consider further education! From this, they were invited on Rock FM to talk about their experience #Aspirations #Awareness #ReadOn Lancs police HR services manager just so happened to be in her car, on her way to work and heard B & S on the radio! She got in touch to offer them some work experience with the police as this is something they’d both expressed interest in. #RightPlaceRightTime #Serendipity On 11th Aug, B & S spent an exciting afternoon at Lancs Police HQ having a tour, learning all about the different departments and even watching some of the new police recruits in training. B & S even got to try out sitting in the chief’s chair #Exciting #CareerGoal #AimHigh B&S met with the Chief of Lancashire Police who listened to their experiences as young carers & surprised them with the prestigious ‘Chief Commendation Award’ in recognition of all they do for their families. It was our final session of #DrivingHealthyFutures and the young people learnt how to cook halloumi fries and healthy chicken nuggets served with a fresh salad and coleslaw. The food all got a big 👍🏻 apart from the radish in the salad! Supermarket vouchers were then given to the young people to enable them to purchase the ingredients and equipment to recreate the dishes for their families at home 💚

Hi My name is Evie and I want to tell you about a recent thing I did to help other children.

About 4-5yrs ago I had the idea that I wanted to help children who were poorly and I got this idea from seeing poorly children when I attended hospital. I have a condition called Systemic Onset Juvenile Arthritis and have to attend Manchester Children’s Hospital on a regular basis. I used to see and meet children with different conditions and illnesses and I would always go and chat with them.

I met one girl who told me she had cancer and it was then I realised I wanted to help other children with this condition. I told my parents that I wanted to grow my hair and give it to charity to help these children. My parents were very supportive and that’s what I did. So I grew it and grew it and in April 2023, I had enough hair to be able to have it cut off and help a child have a wig made from my hair. As you can imagine it is very expensive so my parents helped and we have so far raised around £700. This will pay for 1 wig and 2 consultations for children who have cancer.

I am really proud of what I have done and so is everyone I know, especially my family. I am so happy to know a child will be walking round one day with a wig made from my hair. I made sure I kept it in very good condition knowing my hair would be a wig for a child who cannot grow their own hair.

LYC are extremely proud of Evie for her kindness , and we must also take our hats off to Evie, because not only does she have a debilitating chronic illness herself she is a Young Carer for one of her family members as well!!

Inspirational , Kind, Thoughtful and Awesome!!

Art competition for children & young people supported through Barnardo's

Calling all budding artists- we’re on the lookout for artwork for our supporter calendar competition again! For the ninth year in a row, we’re looking for works of art created by the children and young people we support - with certificates for all contributors and prizes for those whose work is selected! The deadline to send the artwork is no later than Thursday 20th July 2023. The winners will be announced in August. The calendar is part of our September fundraising appeal that mails to around 60,000 Barnardo's donors, and features artwork (drawings, paintings, collages - you name it!) from children and young people using our services. Supporters love seeing the artwork each year, and last year's appeal raised over £135,000 towards our work!

What’s the theme?

As always, we want the calendar to reflect the worlds our children and young people live in. So this year, the theme are Imagination and Dreams.

• We want all children and young people to go deep into their imaginations- perhaps bringing to life the world of their dreams when they’re asleep or illustrating their dream job or holiday destination...

• We’d encourage our young people to really let their imagination run wild and get creative! They could take use paint, pencils and collage, take photos, create digital artworks or perhaps collect leaves, flowers and feathers from a walk to create a mixed media piece. The possibilities are endless!

• The dream theme is just a suggestion – as ever we’d love to see any and all works of art, particularly featuring the different seasons of the year to match with the calendar.

Please note that artwork must be in landscape format ideally, as the calendar is landscape format.

Last year’s entries were amazing!

The theme last year was Nature and included a range of mixed media, such as painting, digital artwork and even 3d crafts using feathers and collage. In some of the artwork we saw robins, rainbows, flowers, trees, snowy scenes and much much more. This year will be no different as we encourage artists to make their artworks out of any media of their choosing, such as items they have around the house (collages from magazines, using wool or cardboard, etc). Bright and colourful pieces work really well with the style of the calendar and are very eye-catching, so please encourage service users to be as colourful and creative as they like.

Our September 2023 cash appeal will be raising unrestricted funds for our brilliant children’s services. And we need these amazing works of art to ensure the appeal is a success! In addition to entry, the winning artists will receive a £10 Amazon gift voucher to spend. A £20 Amazon gift voucher will be up for grabs for the artist selected as the overall winner who will have their artwork featured on the front cover of the calendar.

All finalists will also receive copies of the final 2023 calendar. And as a thank you for taking part in our competition, all entrants will receive a branded certificate.

The competition is open to all service users and of all ages! Entrants must provide the following when submitting artwork(s):

• Name (the young artist – we can use pseudonyms in the actual calendar, but we’ll need real names for the consent forms and certificates)

• Age

• And a completed contribution form, printed or online (we’ll need this to ensure we have the consent to print the artwork in the calendar).

Name and age will be printed under the shortlisted artworks on the calendar, so please do get permissions to print such details or if they’d liked to remain anonymous - where anonymous a pseudonym will be used.

Artwork guidelines

Artwork must be done in landscape format on the paper.

Scans or photograph of the artwork must be as high resolution as possible to ensure a good print quality.

Image should be no more than 15MB in memory size.

We took our young carer's to @rockandriver Lancashire yesterday and we had an awesome time on the Ropes Course, Zip Line, Air Bag Jump, and Canoes. Some of our young carer's said "Today was fun and exciting and also very thrilling, thank you for taking us” and “I reallyyyyy enjoyed today! It was amazing, I enjoyed doing all of the activities such as the long zip wire, the 2 obstacle courses and all the water activities were really good! Thank you for inviting me! We had an awesome time @thedukeslancaster last week. The young carers took over the theatre and showed off their artwork from one of the art workshops they had had. They had pizza, & ice cream, watched a film on the big screen & then we enjoyed the stage makeup workshop. We had lots of laughs, with one young person saying; "I really enjoyed it, I found the make up was the best part, the movie I really enjoyed and the food was amazing the make up was my favourite part and I would 100% do it again” Many thanks to Carl, James and their fabulous team for making us feel so welcome it was a blast!!! #lycservice #barnardos #dukeslancaster #youngpeople

A beautiful story

One of our young carer’s dreams came true when she became a part of Lytham’s 2024 retinue for the Rose Queen. A special crowning ceremony took place on Thursday at Lytham Hall, and it was her responsibly was to look after the Rose Queen’s crown. The retinue girls then fundraise this year and next. They give back to the community and attend 3 other galas this year and 4 next year. The girls learn about respecting and supporting one another which is such a valuable lesson, whilst making new friendships and building stronger ones along the way. It’s also enjoying and maintaining local traditions that have been in place for over a century and importantly about having fun! She said: “From the age of 6 I have gone to all the clubs days around my area, and I’ve always noticed one club that has stuck out to me and always dreamed to be in it one day, when I went to last year’s club day in Lytham I saw a carriage with 6 beautiful retinue girls in stunning dresses. As I went to guides for two years with some close friends I got chosen to be in the retinue, it was like a dream come true. Ever since I’ve been chosen, I’ve looked forward to all the great days and nights I’m going to have. I started off going to the shops with all the retinue girls to look for a dress that we wanted to wear and it was great as we had a lot of great laughs and found the dresses that we all dreamed to have, we then did a bunch of charity events at the methodist church and raised lots of money to support getting our dresses and decorating the carriage. Now when I think about last year watching the club day and thinking how gorgeous they look in the carriage, it makes me think that people will be thinking the same as I did with last year’s I never thought I would have accomplished this dream of mine, but I have and I’m so happy I have.”

The Holidays Activities and Food (HAF) programme provides at least 4 hours of activities a day, including a meal, over 16 days of the school summer holiday. If a child is eligible for a funded place, parents will receive an e-voucher by text or email on 3 July 2024.

The text or email will come from hello@holidays who Lancashire County Council have commissioned to send out the vouchers.

The vouchers will be issued by a child’s school and sent to the contact phone number or email account held by them. This will only be used for holiday e-vouchers. The e-voucher will contain a 16-digit HAF code and will have a link to our HAF webpage (https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/.../school-holiday-activities/), which will signpost parents to where they can book a place for their child.

At the weekend we attended East Lancashire youth pride at Rossendale family and wellbeing hub. We spoke to young people, families and staff from other agencies and LCC about the service we offer across Lancashire. There was lots of cake, mocktails and music including karaoke. Last night was our Kirkham Peer Support group. The venue had to be changed at last minute and bad weather tried to stop us, but nothing could prevent the young carers and their project workers from meeting up, having fun/games and food. Big SHOUT OUT to the dance instructor and group from @eganrogersacademy for visiting Barnardo’s Lancashire Young Carers yesterday. The young carers loved every minute and so did the adults!! We did not expect to learn so much in such a short space of time!! It was great fun and hats off to the dancers who showed us some of their routines. Some of the young carers commented on their way home from the event saying; "This was my first time with young carers and I was made to feel very welcome and I felt comfortable, I am looking forward to the next session”

13 young carers and 4 project workers had an absolutely brilliant day out at the zoo. The young people took it in turns to use the professional camera to capture photos of animals which will feature in our annual calendar. Some highlights of the day were the sea lion show and getting up close with the rainbow birds. I think the photos speak for themselves when I say everyone had such a fun time exploring the zoo, seeing the animals and spending time together, but just in case here are two young carers comments on the day:

"the zoo was fantastic fun but the best bit was meeting people I really think are my friends- we've all swapped numbers to keep in touch"

"that was the best day of my summer holidays, thank you so much"

The young carers created a feast of chicken nuggets, halloumi fries, garden salad, coleslaw and dips, followed by scones, clotted cream and strawberries. Everyone enjoyed the food with many not having tried halloumi fries before. All agreed that the home made food tasted far better than those well known fast food chains. We had even made enough food so everyone could take some home for their families to try, along with their very own Lancashire Young Carers Cookbook which they were all chuffed with. We had lots of great feedback on this session from the young carers, with lots suggesting it should be a regular session.... watch this space!!

Young carers had their monthly peer support meeting in Kirkham and enjoyed learning new cooking skills making cheese burgers, salad and haloumi fries. A good time was had by all.

Last week we had a great day out at HAPPA- Horse and Pony Protection Association. The young carers got to meet and pat the horses and ponies and learn all about them and how they came to be at the centre. We took part in the gold medal challenge around the yard. The young carers did various activities/challenges to win the gold medal, and the one with the most medals won a prize at the end of the day. The young people loved looking at all the different shapes and sizes of ponies and horses and we had ice cream and drinks in the sunshine

Last night our Young Carers Connect (YCC) and Photography group met up to make some very important decisions. For this to happen, pizza was a must!! They viewed, discussed and eventually agreed on the shortlisted photographs to go into next year's calendar. Finally, they all voted on which photo is going to be the front cover and which photo is for each month.

The Violence Reduction Network have created a survey for Lancashire residents (including Blackpool) around feeling safe in their area. They are very keen to have responses from young people themselves as we know anecdotally that we have pockets where young people do not feel safe going out to the shop or a youth club etc. on their own.

There is a great opportunity starting on Monday 18th November at the Community Centre at Weeton Barracks. Funded by the Veterans Foundation and open to all families of serving personnel and veterans. I would like to introduce Operation Odyssey. There will be 4 training modules over the next academic year and it kicks off with the first module – Pathways to Effective Living – come along, take part, meet new people and learn how by perfecting Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits you can increase your chance of success whether that be linked to family, friendships, working life or in your military base community.

Carers Trust would like to invite you to join their Carers Trust Webinar: City and Guilds Bursary / Local Community Skills Fund

On Wednesday, 5th February at 12.00pm, Carers Trust will host City & Guilds, who will share details on accessing their bursaries, offering up to £5,000 (in some cases this could be up to £10,000 depending on individual circumstances) to fund training for unpaid carers over 18+. They will also discuss their Local Community Skills Fund, which provides £10,000 to organisations creating lasting social impact by helping individuals develop the skills needed to move toward employment.

T-Shirt Competition

We are launching our YCF2025 T- shirt competition for young carers to design this years’ very important 25^th Anniversary t-shirt, which is given to every young carer who attends the festival! Simply create a coloured design that incorporates the theme ’25 years of connecting Young Carers’. The entries need to be no bigger than A4 and must provide the first name (or initials) and project name of the entrant. There is a blank template that you can use attached.

Our young carer said: "My brother always gets away with things, just because he has autism but I would be told off if I did it.”

What we did: We had sessions around what autism is, what autism looks like for the young carer's brother and thinking about why things might happen.

What's changed?: The young carer doesn't feel as frustrated as now they have a better understanding that their sibling has different needs and perceptions of the world.

As LGBTQ+ History Month draws to a close we would like to share with you what we have been doing as a service to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.

We have been exploring ways that we can ensure young carers feel safe to be themselves now and in the future.

Currently, we are open in our discussions with our 14+ young carers about their identity. As workers, we wear badges to introduce our pronouns and include them in our emails.

As a service we are working towards achieving the 'Safe Space Award' designed to celebrate services that create inclusive and supportive environments for LGBTQ+ individuals.
