Tom Buchanan, the man, the myth, the legend. He has a loving wife, a child, lives in a good neighborhood, and has enough money to support his family. Tom was living a dream life that others wish they had. Tom was doing great until Gatsby came into his life. The man living a lie. Gatsby was on a mission to take Daisy (his wife) back and spoil her endlessly. Tom was not happy about this even though he had his own secrets as well but Tom has a soft spot for his wife. When Daisy told Tom that she never loved him he was "flushed with his impassioned gibberish, he saw himself standing alone on the last barrier of civilization" (Fitzgerald 130). In this scene we see some of Toms true emotions, the feelings that he holds back from everyone besides his wife. When Daisy told him she never loved him he was flabbergasted and had no idea what to say. This is one of the few times that we see Tom as a new person. He has always acted so tough and made it seem like he could always get what he wants, but for once he doesn't. Toms emotions in this scene shows how Tom still acts like a spoiled little boy screaming and crying when he doesn't get what he wants. Also, by him showing his true emotions in this scene, he sees he can manipulate his wife and show how he still 'cares' about her and that he will do anything to get back. Even if it leads to murder.

Sweet Sweet Revenge

Tom saw that in the end he might not have anyone to love and was starting to head into a downward spiral. His wife was falling in love with Gatsby and nothing could stop this, until one night it all changed. When Daisy and Gatsby were coming back from the hotel after the fight, Tom and Gatsby switched cars. On the drive home, a women ran into the street. The car swerved away from the woman and then swerved back. The car ran over her like a dead animal on the street and was killed in an instant. We later discover that this woman was none other than Myrtle, Tom's mistress. Tom was very upset when he discovered this and assumed that Gatsby killed her but Daisy was the one who was driving and Tom never knew this. As revenge against Gatsby he "told [Myrtle's husband] the truth. [Wilson] was crazy enough to kill [him] if [he] hadn't told him who owned the car. [Wilson's] hand was on a revolver in his pocket every minute he [was talking to him]" (178). Tom told Wilson the truth about who drove the car that killed Myrtle but he didn't tell Wilson the whole truth to protect himself. Tom knew that if he did tell the truth that he would have been dead in an instant. Also, Tom took this as a way to get rid of Gatsby for good, that way he didn't have to get any blood on his hands. Wilson knew how vulnerable Wilson was a could have told him anything to get him off of his back. Wilson was so upset that he killed Gatsby and then killed himself. Tom knew that all of this happened but could care less because that is who he is. He "smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made" (179). After Tom found out about all of this he didn't care and just made a new life for him and Daisy because he could. Because Tom lives this "perfect" life, no one could stop him from ruining it. Not even a man that has more money and power than Tom because he has his ways and will ruin anyone's life if they get in his way.

Overall, I think that the book wants the reader to think or see Tom as a greedy man who gets what he wants. I strongly believe this because Tom acts like this all throughout the book in many instances. In one in instance in particular, the end Tom struggled to keep Daisy with him while Gatsby tried to take her away. Then Myrtle died and Tom showed some real, true emotions because he actually had feelings for Myrtle. Also, Tom was as hard as a rock and never showed any real emotion. He always had this cocky attitude towards others knowing he was better than them with his money and how he treated people. Tom made me think of a poem we read in class called "Let America be America again" by Langston Hughes. A few lines in particular made me think of this character, "I am a young man full of strength and hope, Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab of gold! Of the ways of satisfying need! Of owning everything for one's own greed!". This makes me think of Tom because he is very greedy and has a lot of money. I mostly think Tom as greedy because he cheats on his wife to make himself happy and boses others around for his own fun and sometimes profit depending on who it is. In the end I honestly think the book should have ended with the killing of Tom instead of Gatsby because I would want to see how the other characters would react and how different the end would have been. But yet again, we can't all get what we want unless we are Tom Buchanan.
