During the educational mobilization initiated at the end of the 19. century, in 1883 or 1855 it was opened as a two-class school called Mekteb-i I'dadi-i Mülki in the Necip Bey mansion in the Veli Semsettin neighborhood wich is in the city center; two years later, the number of classes were increased to four. The aim of the school was to provide its students with work decency and to eliminate the shortage of intermediate staff needed by the state. It was a preparatory school between rushdiyya and sultani. It first graduated 5 students in July 1889.

In the 1892-1893 school year, the school was reduced to seven classes, including classes. After the rapid increase in the number of students, the construction of a new building on the mansion plot began in 1888. A year after the start of construction, the land next to it was purchased and joined the school land.
Governor Mahmut Celalettin Pasha, who made great efforts to finish the school, prepared an inscription in 1890, although the construction was not yet finished. The last two couplets of the verse in the inscription are as follows:
“Abdulhamid Khan built this Supreme school. When it was completed, Governor Jalal dropped the date with his poem.” The structure could not be completed at the base until it was requested, and the inscription could not be replaced because the Governor Mahmut Celalettin Pasha left the governorship. The new building was completed and commissioned in 1891.
In the early 1890s the school was converted to boarding. In 1893, ten houses around the school were purchased and incorporated into the school grounds.
Between 1903-1906 a library, a dormitory, a refectory, an indoor recess hall, and a bathhouse were added to the building in 1911. Towards the end of 1903, branches of agriculture, commerce and art were opened at the school. In addition, in 1904, the Bursa Museum was opened as a separate organization in the school garden under the name of Museum-i Humayun. Works from the Ottoman, Seljuk, Roman and Byzantine periods were exhibited here until they were moved to the Yesil Madrasa in 1926.
Part of the building was used as a hospital during the Greek occupation.
The school that known is as Bursa Sultani Mektebi in 1910, renamed as Bursa Boys' High School in 1923.
Atatürk visited the school in 1924 and 1925, two times in total, and wrote down the honour book that he was pleasured with the valuable memory of the times that he spent in the school. He visited the class of Mr. Nevres who was also the French teacher of him in War Academy, too. Then in 1998, the memory of the class kept alive with a plaque.
Instead of the demolished old dormitory, a new outbuilding builded in 1973.
In this school, the names like Reşat Nuri, Orhan Gökyay, Kazım Baykal, Ziya Samar, Süleyman Nazif worked as a teacher and their students had important positions in art, politics, science and social life.
In the school garden, there are statues of Atatürk and the teachers who worked in the school.
Sait Faik is one of the most important students that graduated from the school who wrote his first story named "İpekli Mendil" in literature lesson.
It remains to education as Anatolian High School since 2005.
In may 2011, a book published that contains the history of the school. It named as Bursa Mektebi Sultanisi.
In may 2016, the Anatolian part of its name removed but it was still has the qualities and education rights that any Anatolian School need to have.
A traditional ceramony of school is a meeting that repeats every year on the last sunday of May, at 10 am.
