Sadly, without looking out and maintaining these lovely sanctuaries, they simply will cease to exist. If we don't start now, it's possible that we won't be able to walk a few feet without stumbling upon a cigarette or soda can. Not only that, but the parks provide a home to all sorts of creatures and critters. Think about the poor, poor chipmunks, forced to uproot and relocate, possibly not surviving the whole difficult, trying expedition, and perhaps even having juvenile chipmunks who have to survive on their own. Similar things might happen to the fish. Even if the chipmunks do make the journey, fish can't leave their lake, which gets polluted and causes them to either get mutations or die. If you vote for Gia, we can figure out a way to prevent this disaster from striking. If you would like to, turn or scroll to pages 27-28 of the Vestavia Hills City Schools Handbook. The dress code states, “The purpose of the dress code is to give students a safe, orderly, and distraction-free learning environment.” This implies that the way teens dress is distracting. Yes, I admit that sometimes that is the case. But using common sense, we can judge what is appropriate. What we wear on a Saturday at home is entirely different than what we wear to a Friday night party. I feel that clothes are a good form of self expression. However, it seems that mostly girls are targeted. Have you ever noticed that the boys sometimes wear shorts that are maybe an inch or two too short? Will they get dress coded for it? Slim chance. Additionally, the way girls get dress coded is extremely unfair. They only write up certain body types. If Angie and Suzanne wore the same shorts, only Suzanne will get dress coded. Yesterday, I got the chance to interview some 6th graders who will not be named. They told me that they got dress coded for their shorts, but the next day, a girl in their class wore the same ones, and no-one said anything. I also asked some 6th grade boys if the dress code matters to them. It is there to keep distractions away, but most of them said that they are focused on their school work, and that girls’ bodies aren’t distracting. So what if they see a brastrap? And even in some cases, similar body types will get dress coded in different ways. One girl might get dress coded, but a girl with the same body type won't get dress coded due to the fact that she is on a school team, her parent is a staff member, or her parent is very involved in the school. This is simply unfair and biased. How can you tell what mid-thigh is on one person? It’s different for everyone. With that being said, I would like to put forward the idea that we could loosen up on dress code, allowing us to wear what we want. Obviously, there are some limitations. If something a student is wearing is completely inappropriate, they must be punished, but other than that, we should let students express themselves. My friends are even hosting a Ukrainian family for a few months. Depending on where they are, immigrants get in to our country in different ways. Some of them get checked in, while others don't. Some get reprimanded, while others don't. In some rare cases, an immigrant might even live their whole lives without being accounted for by the government. Other times, they might be met by violence and harassment.
