Duration: 20-30min

Group requirement: The activity is suitable for a more formed group, when they already feel comfortable sharing with each other and some trust is built, because some difficult topics and opinions could come up. A constructive and open reflexion after is key for making this exercise succesfull.

Materials: post-its, variations based on what you have available and how you want to carry out the exercise - backpacks, bags, hats, or simply papers can be used.

Activity steps: Ask participans to take some post-its. Then ask them to go around the room and write a stereotype or an assumption about another persons country or culture, and then put it in the persons backpack. Encourage them to not censor themselves, and write as freely as possible, even if the associations that come up are negative. Give them time to go around and do this for each person.
(Variation: If you are using papers, instruct half of the participants to tape the papers to their backs while others write, and then switch.)
When this is done, each participant can read what was in their backpack. You may also previously ask them to share what they think the others wrote. 

Group reflexion: 

How did you feel reading the stereotypes about your own culture? Was there anything that surprised you?
What are some of the thoughts and feelings that came up while you were writing about others?
Where do you think these stereotypes come from? Why are they dangerous?

Reflexion is the key to this exercise because it can be emotionally challenging. The group should be encouraged to share their feelings and any frustration that the activity has risen.

Why is it important to discuss intersectionality? First and foremost, it is an instrument that helps recognize and reflect on power and privilege, that are based on many different parts of our identities, such as skin colour, gender, sexuality, disability, income, age, education, religion, citizenship status, and so on. With this we begin to deconstruct the systems that hold them up (legal system, colonization, politics, capitalism, war, economy, immigration system...) and figure out ways how to fight them, both individually and collectively. The goal of intersectionality is to foster greater awareness and understanding of the complex and diverse experiences of individuals within society and to promote more inclusive solutions to address systemic discrimination and oppression.

The history of humanity is the history of migration. 

The causes are very diverse: new economic opportunities, search for work, family reunification, escaping from conflicts, persecution, human rights violations, consequences of climate change, etc.

Migration is full of stereotypes and false information. Migrants come from various countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Recognizing this diversity helps challenge stereotypes and fosters understanding and empathy towards their unique circumstances. 80% of irregular arrivals to Spain arrived by plane and not by boat (from Latin America and not Africa).

This is why humanizing migration and recognizing the realities of it is key - understanding the experiences and needs of migrants, and advocating for their rights and dignity.The experiences of people that migrate can vary a lot. It is not rare that it is a dangerous and challenging process, and basic human rights are at stake. Racism, discrimination, fear, ignorance, police brutality, language barriers, state laws; these are just some of the hardships and systematic abuse that the people face.
