She died in 2014 at the age of 86 years old.
2. What is the speakers' tone?
-Her tone while reading poet seems rather inclusion, responsible and somewhat a bit emotionless (she didn't really sounds like stressing on the point of the poet she read).
3. Notes about the keywords indicating the tone:
-She is trying to instill that humanity is given yet another chances to not polluting the earth

-She asked that humanity should give much attention to keeping the earth clean from all kind of pollution

-A rock, a tree, and river in the poem indicates how that kind of scenery would be much peaceful for us to sit

Hi! I am Tay Yee Meh and I was the device detective during the Literature Circle discussion that we had in class for the poem "On the Pulse of the Morning". The literary device that my team members and I had identified is personification. The rock, river, and tree are personified, and the poet has attributed human characteristics such as speech and thoughts to these three nonliving entities of nature. For example, the rock cries out to humankind and tells them to stand on it and face their distant destiny bravely. Besides, the river is humanized by the poet. The river says that it will sing a lovely song and invite humankind to rest by its side when they want to find peace. The tree is also given the ability to speak as it invites mankind to "plant" themselves beside it when they need support. In my opinion, these three characters are the ancient residents of Earth in this poem and they are depicted as forgiving and kind because they are willing to help and offer refuge to humans despite being the victims of humankind's ignorance, selfishness, greed, and cruelty.

Hello there! My name is Syamalla Muthaliar a/p Mages Weran and I was assigned as the clevel connector for the poem The Pulse of the Morning. I was asked to relate any part of the poem to real life situations, experiences, news, movies or stories. This poem was highlighting how nature is so forgiving no matter how badly the humans treat it. Therefore, I related the poem to the recent tragedy that happened at Pasir Gudang, Johor. There was a toxic chemical pollution caused by irresponsible parties which in return affected the humans back. Chemicals waste were carelessly dumped into the river nearby. About 111 schools were ordered to shut along with kidergartens and preschools as well. It was said that about 2775 people were affected in the case. Hence, we should learn to appreciate nature's goodness and be grateful for it.

Hello! I am Noran Nur Munira binti Khalili and I was the Device Detective for the the poem "On The Pulse Of Morning" by Maya Angelou. There is quite a number of literary devices that my team and I found in this poem.
1. Personification
There is a lot of personification in this poem because the main subjects of the poem are a rock, a river and a tree. Maya Angelou portrayed these elements of nature as humans. This can be seen in some lines in her poem.
EXAMPLE 1: Stanza 3, Line 1

“But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,”

We know there is no way a rock could cry, but the writer made it as if the rock is a human that can cry out aloud which can be heard clearly.

EXAMPLE 2: Stanza 8, Line 2

“A River sings a beautiful song,”

Maya Angelou personified the river by telling us that the river is singing a beautiful song.

2. Anaphora

There are some anaphora devices found in this poem, which is the repetition of certain word or phrase at the beginning of two or more consecutive lines. This is usually used by the writer to generate impact on readers or to persuade them.

EXAMPLE 1: Stanza 5, Line 2 to 3

“The angels, have crouched too long in

The bruising darkness,”

EXAMPLE 2: Stanza 16, Line 2 to 5

“The African, …

The Catholic, …

The Irish, …

The Gay, …

The privileged, …”

3. Metaphor

A metaphor is a device where a word or a phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. The writer uses metaphors to add some variety to their language.

EXAMPLE 1: Stanza 13, Line 1 to 2

“Before cynicism was a bloody sear across your

Brow and when you yet knew you still”

EXAMPLE 2: Stanza 8, Line 1

“Across the wall of the world,”

EXAMPLE 3

The Rock, The River and The Tree are emphasized by having a capital letter each time in the poem and the capitalization of the indefinite articles also shows how important these three elements are. These elements, in my opinion, resemble humans that are watching other humans destroying the world. The writer uses metaphor to show the rock, the river and the tree as humans and this can be seen from the numerous amountS of personification devices used by the writer.

This is a powerful section which poses an existential question in metaphorical form. Addressing all humans as a country, You, the River suggests the human is ignorant, knows nothing, yet arrogantly persists in the pursuit of war and delusional dominance.

Heyya! My name is Zahra Najihah. I choose section 16 and 17. In those sections where the author stated a variation of races, ethnics and religions, it gives me a new view and perspective towards the world, especially about The Gays. These sections help me in thinking that we all have the same state of mind. We are actually aware of the current issues about the mother nature such as global warming, ice collision and green-house effect. But we choose to ignore them. Nature “cry” for help but we tend to neglect and what worse is that we continued and making the thing worst. We hear, we see and yet overlook these matters as something that common.

Greetings!!! Im Thurgadevi Ravichandran and i was the passage picker.I have chosen stanza 3,4 and 7.Stanza 3 is interesting because it highlights the Rock crying out to mankind forcefully to stand upon its back to force their distance destiny. However, the Rock also declares that it is against people who find pleasure in its shadow.Like a mother, the Rock is caring but also has a strict personality.Stanza 4 emphasizes, the Rocks warning to humans.Though,it is concerned about humans,it will not provide shelter for them as they should come out of the shadow and live up to their full potential.Stanza 7 is also similar to stanza 3 which makes it rather arousing. It is another reminder from the Rock.It again invites human to stand on it and welcomes them to show their true identities. The reason why i chose these 3 stanzas because it revolves around the Rock that is an interesting character in the poem.

Hi! My name is Nurul Izzah. For this week, the roles that I have been assigned in the Literature Circles is Discussion Director. The question that I have choose from the list of questions are who is the speaker in this poem? What is the speaker’s tone? And the last one is to make one notes about key words that indicate this tone. The possible answers that I think suitable for all the questions are the speaker of this poem is Maya Angelou. She was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. Her speaker tone in this poem is motivating. "On the Pulse of Morning" is a poem filled with messages of hope and comfort. It makes you feel motivated and hopeful. This poem is a call to us to change our ways, and actually makes you realize how and why we need to change. It gives us hope that, despite how damaging our behaviour has been, we can still change it and begin to have positive impacts on our world and other people. Lastly, the key words that I think indicate this tone is “give birth again to the dream”. The poem reminds us that the world is not a safety blanket, and cannot cover up our flaws, rather, it can make us strong. We, like everyone else, have experienced feeling lost and hopeless before, but this poem emits strength and courage to face up to our actions and make the brave changes that are long overdue.

I chose several lines from two stanzas in the poem. The connection is Text to World. The first one is from Stanza 16 which is,
"The Gay, the Straight, The Preacher,"
This line is related to current hot issue about the LGBT. Nowadays, the worldwide LGBT tribes demonstrate on the road asking community to accept them and to maintain their rights in life. The second one is from Stanza 20 which is,
"Other seekers—desperate for gain,

Starving for gold."

This lines is closely related to destruction of the forest. Deforestation has been widely done by greedy people who only looking for profit without considering the sustainability of the nature.

Assalammualikum and greeting. My name is Nur Atiqah Binti Abdul Rahman and my role for last week Literature Circle was Passage Picker for the poem "On the Palse of the Morning" by Maya Angelou. I choose these lines;

Mold it into the shape of your most
Private need. Sculpt it into
The image of your most public self.
Lift up your hearts
Each new hour holds new chances
For new beginnings.

From the line that I choose from the poem “mold into the shape of your most private need. Sculpt it into the image of your most public self”, it gives an impression that we have an image that we show to the public and an image that we ourselves only knows about. The image that we show to the public may not be accepted by the public but we must keep our heart strong as wherever we go in this world people would be judging you. In this poem the writer said “lift up your hearts” give me a deep impression where whenever we are having a problem or people do not see eye to eye with your opinion or when they try to bring you down you must stay strong as all of these problem will turn you into a more mature and strong hearted person. “Each new hour holds new chances, for new beginning” I like this lines because it possesses a very powerful meaning in which those lines portray of a person have every day, every hour, every minutes and every seconds in life in which that person can have a new beginning to change to be a better version of themselves if they wanted it to be done.

The poem that we need to work on was "On The Pulse Of Morning" written Maya Angelou.
The literary device that I had found is Personification. Personification happens when an abstract element or non-human figure shows human-like characters of qualities. In the poem, it can be detected in Stanza 3 Line 1 which says "But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,". In this beautifully written line, it shows how a non-human element which is a rock acts like a human. Rocks are not alive so it cannot do things like crying, eating and etc.
