Could be caused by dominance, fear and anger between fowler and pyle. The revelation that pyle likely orchestrated the incident and is marrioneting the general. A battle about who is morally right.

Phyle was responsible for his own death because his actions were a catalyst for his death. There were other factors like Fowler setting up a meeting and Hinh physically stabbing him. If he hadn’t gone to Vietnam and blown up the plaza he wouldn’t have been killed. Proud of stopping the explosion of the military parade but didn’t try to stop them from blowing up the plaza.

Fowler and Minh

Hinh planted the idea of assassination to Fowler
Fowler agreed but didn’t completely go through with it until he found out Pyle’s intentions, gave Pyle many chances to clear himself or at least show some sympathy
Hinh’s people ultimately did the killing but after Fowler gave that signal

his arrogance made him blind to walking into a trap that his friend orchestrated
he is stubborn; Fowler even tells him to go back to America with Phoung or to come back to the house if he can’t make it
He seemed out of it as he was walking across the river. He may have been stoned, which suggests he went home and thought about his actions after his conversation with Fowler but still chose to meet again

I think every character played a role, however the main stage goes to Fowler and his assistant, Hinh. Especially Hinh, who seemed intent on capturing Pyle.

Fowler is like a messenger of death

Hinh is the scythe

And the order was given because of the civilians who were innocently sacrificed (possibly civilians who wanted Pyle gone?)

Pyle sort of caused his own death. Obviously in the actions he’s taken— he assumes no consequences? Also, in his naive demeanour, perhaps, when speaking with Fowler. Did he not sense a change— the suddenly wants to have a private dinner without Phuong…?? The object of both of their obsession? Suspicious!!

He also drove Fowler to perhaps subconsciously orchestrate his murder? Fowler didn’t do it himself, but definitely had a hand in formulating his untimely death. He may claim not to have known— but he asked for a single table…

The cause for his death is ultimately his own actions and belief in being correct while failing to see the whole story.

A lot of it was Pyle and his own arrogance

Fowler gave him a chance to feel remorse, but he holds his ground

His oversight of Vietnam’s independence allowed him to be easily killed

But Fowler also uses Pyle’s trust of him to make it happen

Pyle has bodyguards, which he left behind to meet with Fowler

Pyle is a genuine person or at least he wishes to be

Fowler is the direct cause of Pyle’s death.

However, Pyle’s actions such as planning the explosion in the square created more enemies for himself.
