Summary about the History and NCSS related.

Have you ever wanted to live in a castle? Well, today we get to take a trip to visit one virtually. I am going to take you to Coronado Heights castle. This castle is located just a little bit outside Lindsborg, Kansas. To get to this castle we have to take a winding dirt road to the heights which on the way we see beautiful trees, yucca, sumac, and wildflowers. This park area has several fireplaces outdoors to relax, a fireplace inside the castle, stone tables, an outhouse, and several walking trails. This is a place to explore and just be one with nature. Coronado Heights gets its name from an explorer named Franciso Vasquez de Coronado. He visited central Kansas in 1541 looking for Gold. Like most explorers did when coming to Kansas. He was also looking for the Native Americans, Quivira community where he was told trees hung with golden bells and … pots and pans were beaten gold. Franciso did not find his gold and it is unknown if he ascended the heights. This is how the story goes on how a castle appears on a hill in the middle of Kansas. Coronado Heights is isolated on a hill overlooking the Smoky Hill River valley. It is one of the last hills extending to the north which are capped by the sandstone of the Dakota formation. The castle is a local landmark. Coronado Heights reveals a panorama of geological history and covers 230 million years. This landmark can be connected to some of the NCSS themes by being a part of several themes. Firstly it can be a part of the culture by connecting it to Lindsborg because of how this is a Swedish town. We can teach students about Swedish culture and take a field trip to learn more about their dances and food. We can even involve people, places, and environmental themes into this landmark as well. We can teach about this environment now versus how it was when Franciso came to Kansas. We can talk about the Natives that used to live here and how it all changes over time. These are just a few themes we can tie into this famous landmark here in Kansas. Next time you are taking a trip, plan a pit stop here, and explore the wonderful castle.
