When Ruby first arrives at school, why does the U.S. Marshal tell her to, "look straight ahead and not turn back?"

The U.S. Marshall tells Ruby to look straight ahead and not back" because he does not want Ruby to see all of the angry protestors. Ruby was a brave and clever girl, who decided to go to an all white school right after it was determined by the supreme court that segregation of schools was illegal. This made many white Americans angry, particularly at Ruby and her family. The parents of many white-American students protested Ruby attending the same school as their children. Some parents waved angry signs, and some shouted nasty words at Ruby, as evident in the photograph on page 23. Ruby was truly a determined little girl, and she continued to attend school despite the negative welcome she received.

It is a 3 because, it does use some domain specific vocabulary like segregation and protest. The response is organized and is mostly on topic as well as mostly correct grammar.

We give it a 3 because it is had some text evidence. The author also paraphrases in his/her response. It also stayed on topic and is well organized. It also had domain specific vocabulary. It also answered all parts of the question. :D

We think this response is a 2. We think this is a 2 because it doesn't use much domain specific vocabulary. Even though the author stated her answer clearly, it doesn't use much text support. The answer also goes a little bit off topic after the third sentence.

We would give this response a 3. This is because the writer included some text evidence and did not go too off topic. The writer also used a little bit of domain specific vocabulary. The response was organized. The writer included text support however it is not explained with many details. The grammar in this response was used correctly. This is why we would give this response a 3. :)

We think this response is a 3. The author does provide a answer but doesn't really finish the answer. But it does answer the question. Also, it includes details for text but also used some unnecessary details. Lastly, they used some domain specific vocabulary.

We give this response a 4. This paragraph explains all of its details fully, stays on topic, and answers all parts of the questions. It also includes text support, not much, but it references the page they got the text support from. The author also explains why the marshals didn't want Ruby to turn back, while also explaining what protesters wanted and didn't want. This response uses strong vocabulary, but could have used more domain specific vocabulary. No response is perfect, but we grade this response a 4.
