Struggling to be aware of the full range of mental health issues they face themselves. Far more comfortable identifying mental health issues in others.

Problems identifying a mental health issue in the first place. The issue has become "normalised" for them. In which seeking help is not something that they have considered for themselves.

They are aware of the importance of taking care of ones mental health but have trouble applying it daily to their own lives. Often addressing mental health is more of an intervention: it happens when they are overwhelmed and have reached a tipping point. The pressure to be productive, to be progressing well in ones career, friendships and relationships takes precedence over investing in mental health.

Daily apps for mental health revolve around meditation, yoga and mindfulness. In terms of efficacy these are low impact.

At the high impact efficacy end of the spectrum is therapy. Accessibility, or lack thereof, ranges greatly from person to person depending on their location, their job and personal finances.

This is chatbot would sit in the mid impact range of efficacy. It enables users who have had some exposure to therapy but found applying the concepts discussed difficult to apply to daily life the opportunity to do so. Implementing positive thought patterns is done through interacting with the bot where negative thoughts are challenged.

Even for those who actively seek to self help outside of therapy sessions, through reading or listening to podcasts, applying those ideas is difficult in practise. Trying to find a page in a notebook is unpractical when really the instant recognition of feelings and emotions is required.

I've observed this in two different settings:

In conversation with a friend who has a limited allocation of therapy session through work

At work during Mental Health Awareness Week. Questions after sessions often revolved around people wanting practical ways that they could implement these strategies in their day to day life. Answers were vague: "keep practising".
