In Huck Finn, two old, rich, and sophisticated Southern families are involved in a family feud. Like Romeo and Juliet, they do not know the reason why they are fighting.

"Now, George Jackson, do you know the Sheperdsons?" "No, sir- I never heard of them. (89)"

Twain is satirizing the so called "civilised" people of the south. After the huge fight in which many of them are murdered after a Grangerford runs off with a Sheperdson, it is seen that there is no point to the violence.

In Huck Finn, the Duke and the Dauphin are frauds pretending they are royalty. Twain uses them to show how stupid the idea of "birthright" is.

" I yield, I submit; 'tis my fate. I am alone in the world- let me suffer; I can bear it. (117)."

The Duke is saying how hard his life is because he fell from royalty, when really he is living the life that most people live. His "suffering" is amusing, as he has not suffered.

When the gang arrive in a town in Arkansaw, they see a bunch of young men being rambunctious and not working, chewing tobacco and drinking. One man, Sherburn, kills the local drunk, and the mob of people proceed to attempt to lynch him. Sherburn gives a speech to say otherwise.

"The idea of you lynching anybody! It's amusing. The idea of you thinking you had enough pluck enough to lynch a man!"

Twain is using this instance to show how easily the word "man" is thrown around, even to a murderer. After Sherburn's speech, the mob decides not to lynch him, showing the changeability of mob mentality.
