After two weeks collecting pictures, that were taken by holding the phone just around my waist and aiming the camera to the floor, I got a number around 120 photos. These photos were the size of something between A5 and A4. Thought these pictutes would be more interesting if I could arrange them in a compact way, that would obligate the viewer to see many pics at the same time (and not one by one), making the parts of the collection inseparable. So I rescaled the pictures to put as many as I could in a A3 paper ( and keeping it possible to distinct what is in the pictures ).

Printed four A3 papers that contained the pictures and displayed them on the table. After receiving feedback, one suggested that I should have had all pictures cut separate or that I should put all pictures in only one piece of paper. Given that there were just 20 minutes to rearrange the collection, there were no time to cut all the pictures. So I arranged the four original papers on the floor (to preserve the perspective from wich the pictures were taken) in a way that looked like they were all a single piece, creating the effect of forcing the viewer to see many pics at the same time as I wanted since the beginning.
This is how it ended up today:

Exercise: to find different ways to represent my collection (at least four).
Started by using charcoal on a white A2 paper to draw the entire collection as it was disposed on the moment. Since charcoal isn't my strongest tecnique I wasn't being able to represent the aspects of the collection very precisely, need to work more with it.
Next attempt was on drawing with pens, this is a material that I like to use once it forces me to pay more attention to the lines (because the lines can't be erasedd ); also, this time, decided to represent only one of the photos on the collection, as they are all really small, one is likely not going to pay close attention to details, so I chose a photo of my interest and draw it in a bigger size. Worked better because I managed to draw lines with more precision.
Was suggested to use another way to collect the floor, so used thin paper (the first one I used wasn't working that well), charcoal and carbon paper to collect samples of the floor's texture.
After I tried using white gouache in black paper to represent patterns of sidewalks that appeared in the collection, worked better in those that had more contrast in the pattern, because they were easier to see well presented in black and white; another idea using gouache was to use thick paper (representing concrete) and paint the shape of whatever wasn't concrete on one picture. Ended up been the one I liked the most as the elements were more distinguishable if compared with the other works.

1. Decided to have all my pictures cut separate, that way I would be able display they with more freedom.
2. Arranged the photos on grids, dividing them in subgroups based on the predominant colours on each photo. The methods of presentation disposed on the board lead me to this decision, but it didn't worked so well because some subgroups were way bigger than the others making it harder to arrange then in the grid.
3. Used the photos to create a footprint, but only one proved to be hard to understand, some people didn't get it. So created a sequence of footprints, now no one got confused. The idea came from the "explore shapes" that was written on the board.
4. Created footprints in a way one footprint would have similar photos (considering the type of the floor in each photo). Daniel suggested to misture methods of display, so I mistured the shape method with the subgroups method the crate this display.
5. On to the mezanino I placed the 4th display in front of the stairs. The exercise was to explore the environment, so I thought that footprints should come from somewhere and go somewhere. Ended placing them as if someone had come from of the stairs.

Print making techniques:
The technique used in the first part of the day was very interesting as it allowed a lot of control of the parts that would be inked. Making the engravings on the plastic wasn't that hard, but as I put to much strength into it the lines in my print were very rough and bold. Should try not putting so much pressure next time.
The technique of the second part was easier and didn't required that much preparation. At first tried tho use pencil and my feet to create prints (the shoes didn't marked that much, barefoot worked better). After seeing some of the works of the previous group I thought this technique could be used to create textures, tried that out. To scratch the paper with nails and fingers created a interesting texture, knead the paper is also good-looking; tried to create darker prints, applying more ink with the roller don't worked that well, but using the spatula directly on the plastic allowed for darker tones.

Final prestation of the collector project:
I made the footprints path, using the size of my feet and the length of my walk to create it. This path lead to a collection of prints and paintings that I used to capture the different types of floors and it's textures. Everything as displayed on the ground as all the work was related with the floor and it's texture and elements. The public interaction with the work was also of my concern. By leaving the footprints on the floor I wondered with people would or not step on them, some did some didn't, that was interesting and worked well; but no one touched te prints that I left there to be touched, need to think on ways of making it clearer that things should be touched.
The feed back I received was in general positive, specially concerning my concept and the way that my presentation related to it, adding mining. Although, some suggestions that were made should really be taken in consideration. One of the suggestions was that my way of presenting the work (purposely placed on the floor) made it look as if I wasn't taking care of my work (the person words "for me it is like you are disrespecting your on work), and suggested I should put something beneath the pieces so they don't get dirty (tough another person said that simply letting things on the floor totally worked with my concept) . I think others might have thought the same (that I was careless and lazy), so I'll take those appointments in consideration.

For the first exercise of today (making name out of things) I started it by searching for objects that already had a shape similar to letters, because it would be more interesting than creating letters out of many smaller things. Worked nice for some (like "r" and "o"), but for others it was not possible, simply because I couldn't find any suitable object, in these cases the letters were mede of smaller things placed together (like "m").
For the second exercise, I took pictures of places or things that resemble letters and had to use those to create letter forms (specifically letter "B" on my case). The first issue I faced was to transform the "b" picture I took in a pleasant looking type; first attempt was on an sans serif, angled type form, with squared bowls, didn't looked that well and wasn't that similar with the picture. Tried with rounded bowls, worked better, made ut more pleasant looking and was more similar to the picture; from there tried changing x height, cap height, add serif, ascender and the proportions of the bowls. With a variety of type forms options side by side I chose the one that for me responded better to the primary proposal; it kept the proportions in the picture and was easily understandable type, clear and easy to read.

I was asked today to expand and explore possibilities of developing the letter form I created on day 1 with printing techniques.
The first task was to use stencils (that should have been done on previous afternoon), I made a mistake an removed the counters of the "b" stencil, what wasn't on my starting plans. Instead of making a new stencil from the beginning I decided to work with the one I had and try to overcome the wrong cutting (for both challenge and lack of time). Tried creating a stencil that only had the counters ans used more than one color, and tried attaching counters to original stencil; the second worked better but both weren't a good option as the prints ended up badly looking. The alternative was using tape to attach the counters on the paper, making the print over than and removing the attached counters later; takes more time, but the results worth it.
The second part of the day I used screen print, once more I wrongly cut the stencil that were to be used on the screen print (need to improve my technical skills of producing stencils, losed to much time struggling with the stencil cutting). Although the stencil wasn't the one I had thought initially it looked that would produce a nice letter form, so I tried using it on the print process and it actually produced a interesting outcome of a letter "b" made on two colours. Obs: next time on screen printing, make sure different coloured areas are overlapping each other in the corners; otherwise you risk raving unwanted white areas.

In the first part of the day I planed and designed the general idea for the 3D letter form that's going to be made tomorrow. The ideas I primarily had looked good on paper but would be tough to execute in only two days (such as the acetato letter filled with water; that I don't know if it would be possible to make).
Daniel suggested to start thinking on the characteristics of the letter "b" ( the one I'm supposed to build), what it has in common with others letters? What makes it different? Does it has a personality? How you want it to present it self? With those questions in mind I came to the conclusion that "b"`s bowls are a characteristic only he has, and should explore that shape, that appeal. In this line of thinking my top one idea is to build a letter out of thin strips fluttering on wind; a play with the word "blow" (of wind). When the wind blows the "b"s bowls appear, a way of emphasising the "b"s characteristics.
On second part of the day started creating a font that will be digitalized, worked with pencil and later inking for finalisation, but I was not able to complete the task in the time given (something about 30 to 40 minutes), it was taking to long to draw entirely every single letter every time. Back that home I decided to use a vegetal paper to have the different parts of letters pre-prepared passing pencil on and than rubbing the paper made short of prints that allowed me to work faster; if I had done that during class I might would have been able to complete it in time.

Have done the construction of my 3D letter form. I went for the idea of making the letter b out of fluttering strips. Started by making a real scale sketch of the latter, that I latter used as a gabarito for making the actual one. Doubled a wire frame to create the base shape of the letter, than cut lots of thin and tiny strips out of ribbon, these were glowed on the wire structure to create the b's bowls. By wasn't secure with that outcome (it wasn't really pleasant for the eyes, looked like it was lazily done and did not stood still ) , so created a copy of the structure and put both together; gave it a better finish, but making it stand was still a problem.
Have decided to create a separate structure of card box that had a hole in the middle (so wind was still possible) and attached the plumed bowls on it; as the bowls and the rest of the letter are still different this outcome keeps the emphasis on the b's characteristics and doesn't invalidate the blowing possibility.

Presentation of the project:
My first problem today was that I had both 2D (stencils and prints) and 3D ( 3D letter form) pieces that I wanted to display on my presentation. I decided to place the letter on a table (once it was self-standing ) and the 2D on the wall; the problem, than, was to find a place with a clear wall, so that dirty don't interfere with the work, and close to a plug, since I needed a working fan alongside with the 3D letter. The only place I found that fit the parameters was by the pilar, so there were no space for all the prints on the wall. Taking that in consideration I displayed only the stencils on the pilar and placed the prints on the table along with the 3D letter.
I received positive feedback for the way I displayed my work, but unfortunately the fluttering effect on the " B" didn't went as expected. I should have used some lighter materal or longer strips to have the wanted effect. On the presention I felt that I had a small difficulty to talk about the work and explain my process, need to work on my speach abilities.

For the beginning of the day I was asked to develop a specific type font to be used in my protest poster, parting from a word (of my choice) that was related to the theme. As my theme is the major concern some people have with beauty I chose the word "appearance" to work with. Started by making some experimental words using different letter forms ( more caligraphcal ones), but those looked to decorative to be used as a protest. Tried other materials, such as charcoal and brushes, to create a less decorative type, that worked better.
Leopoldo suggested me use materials (or objects) that had some relation with "appearance", such as a mirror. After he said that the idea of using a mirror to reflect the word popped up in my head; so I drawn the letter on the paper, but looking at the mirror, the outcome was upside-down. Was hard to read but if some letters were inverted reading was more posible.
Than tried to arrange a frase in a poster using the types I had just made, but once more the letter forms didn't had that much impact ( they were too clean ), need to find some material that can be used to write the letter forms with precision, but also give it a rough appeal.

For the first part I have done several arrangements of images and took photos of then, but didn't get to actually glue any. That is due to the fact that I didn't liked the out comes. They looked to simple and didn't had much impact, specially concerning the neutral background I chose to work with.
On the second part dicided to work with black paper as background, it gave the images more impact, and worked better as a protest. I tried to create a more complex and chaotic composition inspired by the punk movement, because I thought it would be of a greater impact as protest. Didn't worked well, looked crowded and lacked synthesis, but some parts of the collage could be used to create stencils.

On the previous night I produced a stencil based on a detail of the collages of day 3, this stencil was used today on silkscreen to produce a series of prints. Still using the punk movement as the main reference I decided to use the black color, but in a clean image, not chaotic and crowded as the one of the previus day. The printing went really well, though the stencil was quite delicate, after that (since I still had a lot of time), I've done another stencil for the latters. I really liked the final outcome.
In the afternoon I was asked to plan my protest that should be made the next day, started thinking on what could be related to my theme, and cosmetics came in hand. I could not go to protest in front of a beauty salon ( as I should be around EBAC). So I went for the idea of making up myself and walking around the the building, so that I would be seen by maximum of people posible.

Staging the protest:
The best place possible to perform my protest would be in from of a beauty salon or a cosmetics shop, but I was supposed to be around EBAC, so I decided to walk around all the floors of the building holding my poster, so to be seen by as many people as possible. I used make up to call more attention and as form of performance to protest against the over concern people have with apparence.
In the afternoon I received posited feedback for my works ( the printings); the only one point to be considered is that someone pointed that the poster had a more loose and dirty appeal and the silkscreen prints were very clean and synthetic, the person suggested that should have stayed with only one approach in order to have a single visual language for the hole protest. Julie gave me a more detailed feedback, in general the feedback was positive, I asked her opinion in the visual language matter and she agreed with the persons comment, what made me confirm that I should really look more carefully to this. I also gave her more meticulous feedback, some of the opinions I had on her work were difficult to me to put in words. This shows that I need to work a bit on my communication to make sure I can transmit my opinions more clearly, allowing me to better carry discussions on works and other matters.

Today for the first part of the day I went to the research/ Reflection Workshop. By the discussions about research methodology and reflective writing I came to the conclusion that both my research and reflection need improvement, specially after comparing mine with some of the examples given.
My research consists only on websites I have read or images I have looked, all just placed together in the research file. That's a problem because my research appear to be a bunch of stuff placed together and it's connection with the project isn't quite clear. I could improve by adding notes and comments to the research, in order to make it more organised and create more clear links to my projects.
For the reflection, the main problems I found today were a lack of details and examples (in one case I described playing with different materials, but don't indicate which materials were used); also a lack of depth in the analysis, describing decisions, but don't explain why I took them. I should improve by giving more details on the process and questioning more the reasons that lead me to the decisions I make.
Also did some experiments with different materials, such as fabric, colored plastics, and translucide paper, to create filters for photo making. The colored plastics worked well by altering the color of the entire image, should conduct more tests with different colours.

Today tested out and looked for possibilities of creating analog filters and devices for photograph. Started by sketching the main ideas on my sketchbook, so that I could have a more clear idea of what exactly I wanted to do as a device. After having a considerable amount of ideas I stared to filter these ideas based on what I thought would create interesting photos and that would be practical to use. Among the ideas, that included knots and wire, the box one (see sketchbook) presented it self as the most suitable, since it was small and pratical to cary, and permitted changing the filters and the distances between filter and lens. Made it out of card paper, because it is easier to manipulate and doesn't weight much ( the box should be light or it wouldn't stay still on the phone ).
I also did some more tests with translucide materials as filters, used different colours of plastic to change the colour of the image, tried to combine them in distinct layers, hoping to generate more colours out of the ones I had, it didn't worked so well as the colours weren't mixturing well, the uper layer usually overtakes the others (yellow excluded). Fabric created a blurred effect that can be further explored, and bubbled plastic creates a sort of grid over the image.

Today I had the destroying the image workshop. For each one of the photos I started first by planing what to do on the sketchbook, since every photo didn't had a copy, I would not be able to remake things or correct mistakes, so it was necessary to carefully plan every move.
The first image had a big flower as it's focal point, so I decide to embrace that characteristic and make it be stronger. So used sew to bring more focus to a flower that was the image's subject, by adding lines that lead to the center of the flower.
For the second, I wanted to create a sort of narrative on photo, it was a picture of a funeral. From there I thought of what we usually do with the dead (either bury ou burn), so decided to use fire on the photo, as a way of representing what happens in a funeral.
The third was cut in peaces and sewed.
Forth I cut in strips and changed their position.
Fir the fifth one I used the same techniques used on photos 2 and 4, because these were the most successful ones. Burning proved to be a really interesting way of changing a picture; burn a little and chage the colour of the area; burn more and the area turns black; burn too much and the paper writhes and crumbles.
I like the way cutting the paper and changing the place of things, creates a effect that resembles to fileters and blurred effects.

My task was to create a 3D object out of a photograph, the photo I chose to use was one from the 60 images task that I liked. The image showed lost of Bottles in a close view and on a not very usual perspective, what makes it so interesting for me. For the objects my first idea was to crete a 3D bottle, to make a connection with the image subject, but it was soon discarded as it was to trick to be done in the time that was given to me. My second approach to the task was to make a cylinder, trying again to create a relation with the bottles on the image. I made some attempts in making the cylinder, but I was not been able to properly make it, it's surface wasn't clean and clear, was kind of creased. So I went to a hexagonal shape, it didn't relates much to the image though, so I will produce more pieces to make a relation with the amount of objects on the image.

Did the 30 ideas in 30 minutes exercise. I find it kinda of difficult in the beginning as the ideas weren't coming so easily and the lack of time for developing, even if a little bit, the idea was trick for me. Due to this fact some ideas ended up been cliche or way too simple. After analysing the ideas all together I notice that they could be divided mostly into two groups: either were trash comedies or Greek tragedys. I've been researching a lot into animation and I'm into trying to developing some of the ideas in the form of animations. In both cases (comedy and drama) I think moving image would catch more easily the attention of the public and makes it possible for lost of people to see my work without spending so much.
In the feedback, the group found that the comedy ones were more catching than the tragedies, they would be more easy to do given the time limit to video projects. But they also pointed out that only doing one of them would be to short. So I'll plan several short related and comical animations, and select the ones I find more successful.

Today I was asked to further develop concepts and ideas based on what was porduced and discussed in the previous day. Since yesterday I've been collecting notes of every funny/comical/absurd thing that passes through my head. A bunch of ideas of short scenes where something really unusual happens in the end, for example: a guy walking down the street and passes by a puddle, suddenly a tentacle grabs and drags him to the puddle. I draw the ideas on the notes in my sketchbook, so that I could have a more clear perception of them. There are still two major grups of scenes: the super vomit hero and the odd monsters. Both topics have scenes that I liked and I didn't knew which one I should go for, so I started to ask around for others opinion on this and most people found the monsters more interesting than the hero (some also said that the hero was kind of sily, something that I agree and was a bit concerned about). The super hero, for me, seemed to be a little childish. As the monsters idea is something that I think covers a larger group (also it was the most voted one), I opted to further develop this one.

For the first part of the day I had the crit. The feedback I received today was really useful for the development of my project. The idea I presented was the hiden monsters, didifferent situations were a nonsense monster attacks or eats someone or something, but people in the feedback pointed out that this was a too vague concept, and should try to select a more specific frame of ideas to develop, to converge into a more specific concept. Urban monsters was a example that was given to me in the feedback, I'm not going to do urban monsters, but it gave me a idea, wich is to create a character that has panic syndrome and thinks every thing is a monster that is right about to attack him.
I made the story board of the animation, the character starts at home, leaves, is attacked by imaginary monsters, finally gives up on fighting his fears and goes back home. It's quite a dark ending (considering that I started the project thinking in comedy), because the character gives up on fighting his fears. But I liked more this approach to the story. I think it will have a greater impact on the viewer if it is more serious, making the person reflect on what is been showed.
Now, the main problem is how to develop this into a animation, which techniques should I use (and more importantly, which ones can I use in the time given). I'll try to create samples of back ground scenarios and different approaches to placing the characters in this scenarios, using as refence some combinations that I've seen in the research (entirely digital, hand made, mixture of both), and find the one that has the better cost benefit ratio considering time and quality.
In the second part of the day I had the printing workshop were I was introduced into some silkscreen techniques and processes. As I'm doing a animation, the things I learned in the workshop didn't seemed useful at first, but I might use them to create a poster for my animation.

Self-publish project Day 4

Today was the first day to start prodution and, in accordance with my schedule, I started to develop the scenarios, character, visual language and general appeal of the whole animation. I decided to use a mixture of analogue and technological approaches to developing my animation- the scenarios would be done on paper and later scaned, as for the character and anything that moves I'll use digital frame by frame animation on flash-. The handmade scenarios will contribute to the animation not see too simple as I can add more details and I'm more used to traditional drawing methods. Drawing the animated elements on paper would cost a lot of time (since I would have to draw and later take photos or scan) and paper; directly drawing in the computer would be faster (since I only have a feel days to complete it) and I only have to pay attention to the colors to make the animation dialogs with the scenarios. These were the main reasons for the animation technique choice.
I got a one to one talk with Michael today and the feedback he gave me was useful. The scenarios I was developing in the bigging were really coloured and bright, but he pointed out that they didn't contribute to the narrative I was developing, which had a "quite dark end", as he said. He advised me to make sure that visual language of the animation must add meaning to it and contribute to the storytelling and communication of concepts and ideas. This made me really think that I still have to further develop my communication skills to make sure my work clearly deliveries the message I want it to deliver. So, by thinking about what I wanted to communicate with this animation (the story of a character that is afraid to go outside and gives up on trying in the end), I decided to make it black and white, with more dark tones. That would make the animation to be darker and more serious, in this way the visuals would better dialogue with the story.
For the character, I wanted him to be simple to animate (considering time), but still be catching and entertaining. Did some sketches to test out possible disigns for him and chose the one how best fits the criteria I made.

Today I passed the entire day drawing frames, adding scenarios and producing the animation as a whole. I had previously started to draw the frames yesterday (Sunday) and today (Monday) I carried on the process, that consists of adding the scanned scenarios (made on Friday and Saturday) to the Adobe Animate CC, and than create a new layer above to draw the animated elements (character and monsters). The process looks simple but actually takes a lot of time to be done, as I started to fear for the deadline I came up with some strategies to make the production faster, for example: on the cycles of walk of the character instead of drawing all the frames I only made the first 4 and than made copies of those; this technique allowed me to make long walks of the character faster. Another problem I faced during these last days was that the proportions between scenario and character weren't working well, in some scenes (like the street one and the corner) If I showed the entire scenario in the frame the character would be to small, but if I put the character on the wanted size I lost a lot of information on the background. The solution was to animate the character, but not make him move in the frame and move the background instead to create the idea of movement; by doing this I was able to place the character the way I wanted in the frame and still not lose too much of the background.
One other thing that I put myself to think today was about if the animation would or not have sound. In my research I found some very interesting works that used no sound or almost no sound to create tension and add meaning to the work, that could be an interesting alternative. Again, thinking on the concept and the idea I want to communicate with this animation, I opted for not adding sound. When I was designing the character I made him with no mouth to represent the fact that he is a lone person how don't talk much to people. Another reason is that the monsters he imagines want to eat him, and having no mouth means that he can't fight them, he can't even cry out for help. Having this character concept in mind I opted for a mude animation, relating to the character's inability to talk or ask help and incapacity of fighting his fears.

Today I kept on doing the animation frames. Now that I have most of the animation done its possible to test the video, see how the character is moving and how the story is developing itself in the animation. Some frames that were to fast I slowed them donw, other that were to slow made them past faster. But as I went on revising the animation I noticed that in some parts of the animation it was quite hard to distinguish the animation elements from it's back ground. The main reason for that was that the animated things were transparent and in points where the background had more details the lines got confused with the background elements. To solve this problem I tested adding fill tones to some of the animated objects and played a test. It worked. But making lines and fill tones in the same frames and layers proved to create problems, especially if something needed to be corrected later, these should be on separate layers. So, for practical reasons, I'll finish the line frames and later on all add the fill tones.
I received feedback from the tutors in the studio, they said the animation was good, but they also pointed out the confusion between character and scenarios that I have already mentioned and will be solved.

Today I completed the animation process. The only thing that was left to be done by the end of the day was to add the title and credits. I wanted the font in the title to have some relation with the techniques used in the animation, so I looked for a font that was hand made/calligraphic and was not bold. I didn't wanted strong and heavy letterforms in the animation, because it is all about a shy character.
Daniel gave me some feedback on my animation, in general, he was positive, but he got a little uncomfortable with the absence of sound in the animation, I explained the reasons that made me opt for no sound, but he still suggested that I should try adding sound to it; not necessarily somnoplasty or music (that I think that could break the serious tone of the animation) but that some background noise could contribute to tone of the animation. I'll test it out and compare the two options, using the concept communicating as a parameter to decide.
Another point of the day was to plan how and where I'm going to launch my animation. Considering that I want it to be seen by as many people as possible youtube and facebook are good options, instagram as well. Vimeo is also an important (more important actually) platform considering the specific audience that can be reached by it, that include artists and people from the industry.

Today I already came into the studio with my animation completed. My major concern of the day was making it ready for tomorrow's launch. I had a little talk with Cezar to discuss how the animation should be played tomorrow, he told me to loop the animation three times since the video was quite short. I had a thought time today when the moving image works were been gathered together in the same premier file. My video was in a smaller scale in comparison with other works, because of that my video was surrounded by a enormous dark area. Re-scaling the animation to a larger scale was a possible solution but would cause a loss of quality of the animation. I decided to test both possibilities and chose for the one who causes the smaller interference on the display. By analysing and testing both options I came to conclusion that re-scaling the video was the best alternative, despite the quality loss; the large dark areas were drawing the attention out of the animation and interfering with the work. The quality loss was actually small so it didn't interfered much in the outcome.
I also dedicated a part of my day to produce a poster to place on the walls to call the attention of the public and drag possible viewers for the animation. I wanted the poster to represent the emotions of the character and transmit the main focus of the animation (which is the character fears and his loneliness). For making that I redraw the final scene of the animation in another angle, because it is the most expressive scene of the animation, were we can see the final attitude of the character towards his fears.

In the crit I had today the feedback reseaved was quite useful. The techniques applied on my animation were well done- in the person's opinion- and were successful in the way they represent my work and it's concept. The dark tones contribute for the story, making it darker and more serious, in person's opinion, but the animation could be more fluid (this was a comment I heard a lot today) I agree that a more fluid animation could be more interesting, but it took me a lot of time to produce it the way it is. More fluid means more frames, looking back to my production I think I would not be able to have finished it on time if I had to do more frames. The person found that the publication methods (posting the video on vimeo and youtube) were suitable and adequate, but she didn't made more comments on it.
The feedback I gave to the person was posite in general and I hope it has been useful.
