To understand the Beginings, and advancement of the art through ether technical, scientific, or creative developments. The Vision and concepts through the ages to our present day. From different art styles, camera styles, camera types and processes. With this knowledge gives us a better understanding of photo as an art.

How useful is it to study Photographic History?

Photography has shaped the way in which we imagine the recent past as well as the experience of life in many present-day societies and cultures. Using digital and analogue primary sources, such as archival photographic materials and manuscripts, digital databases, and a range of photographic objects, the Photographic History will provide you with the practical and conceptual skills needed to explore wide ranging professional, scientific and amateur photographic practices.

Why?!!

The most important control is, of course, the creative photographer’s vision. He or she chooses the vantage point and the exact moment of exposure. The photographer perceives the essential qualities of the subject and interprets it according to his or her judgment, taste, and involvement. An effective photograph can disseminate information about humanity and nature, record the visible world, and extend human knowledge and understanding. For all these reasons, photography has aptly been called the most important invention since the printing press.

The photograph I chose to analyise was taken in Black & white. The subject was a portrait of a famous Black woman activist Claudia jones.

More of a portrait picture, stamp using a low level lighting to highlight her face and feature's. The photo's subject is more represented prominent because of this, and in Black & White which captures this well with a darker shadow around her face to frame. I understood about Light and Shade!!

This enabled me more to try out different methods of light techniques with the camera, and be aware of light and shade when planning or taking a photo.
