1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study literature through reading books or poems. We do this to better understand how other people view the world. We get to see their opinion on the world which could teach us something that we did not already know. We study TTTC for a different view of the world in a different time period. O'Brien explains how he sees the world and what it mean to him. Provides us with a different view point

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
Literary texts impact or opinions and ideas on the world. They can provide insight to an idea we did not have before and make us change our minds on something. TTTC impacts us by showing what happens in war and the mental and physical toll it can take on a person and the people around them. O'Brien changed my view on war through his explanation of what he went through.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
Meaning in constructed and expressed through O'Brien's use of literary devices in his vignettes. Devices that can be similar through the entire book or just through one vignette. They can explain O'Brien's meaning in the a smaller part or the point he wants to get across throughout the entire book

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure of TTTC allows it to have many meanings while keeping one main one. By having each chapter be its own story each chapter can have it's own meaning, but at the same time chapters with similar meanings can be used to develop meaning throughout the book

    1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? The context to a literary text helps us form different and more in depth ideas of what the author is trying to say. We would have seen Hughes' poems differently if we didn't know the historical context behind the literature. 
    2. How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own? We try to understand why the piece was written and what is means in the time period. After we understand what it meant in the time period we try to compare it to our own time and see if their are any similarities 
    3. To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture? Cultures can be expressed over literature in a way that many people can understand. While someone can not fully understand the culture just through literature it can be used to provide a little bit of insight. 
    4. How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? The meaning can change for something that calls for change to something that was calling for change. Literature is a way to inspire change among people and if it caused change how it is seen will change.
    5. How do literary texts reflect, represent or form a part of cultural practices? While literature can be used to express culture, it can also used to create culture. Songs, poems, books can all be used to create a culture that defines/applies to a certain group of people
    6. How does language represent social distinctions and identities? Language is a defining part of a group of people who consider them selves to be similar. Although English is spoken all over the world people have changed parts of it making it unique to the region its spoken in

    The structure of the text effects the meaning of the text in various ways. Morrison's style helps immerse us in the world she is trying to put us in. Making us feel what the characters in the book felt. The stream of consciousness allows us as a reader to feel like we are getting the characters unfiltered thoughts so that we can understand the situation as they understand it.     1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.
    What slavery entailed for those in it really helped contextualize Beloved. It helped me build connections throughout the book and explain why some characters acted and thought like they did. Without previous knowledge of the historical background the book would have been much more difficult to understand.

    Beloved has global issues that can also be found in TTTC and the collection of poems written by Langston Hughes. Trauma, oppression, identity are all similar thematic ideas found in each piece. While each piece has a different way to convey these thematic ideas they all impact us in a similar way and allow us to experience what it is like to be in a situation like the characters in the book. Growing up in slavery, being enlisted in the Vietnam war, or facing oppression and prejudice because of skin color all of these events, although not the same, are traumatic in their own way, and by reading and looking into the meanings within these books we can see similarities that allow us to connect the books and further develop ideas.
    How does Beloved connect to our world today?
    Although slavery has long been abolished in the United States, there are still people in the United States that have to live their life after facing a traumatic experience. Beloved allows us to see the difficulty not only for the person who experienced the trauma but also the people around them. Beloved shows us that it takes a lot more effort, work, and support from both them and the people around them in order to move on from the past and try to live what others consider a normal life. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)? 
    The novel shows the issue of gender from both sides. It shows the issue with finding manhood with Paul D and his journey from feeling like less than human to finding his manhood along with his identity.     How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
    Even though it is a graphic novel, Satrapi makes use of classic literary techniques along with techniques used in graphic novels. We can still analyze it in a similar way to literary texts and use the pictures as a way to further our analysis

    What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution? It provided me a new outlook. I did not previously understand what the civilians did in the time period. I had only ever seen what it would look like through the eyes of the media.     Persepolis connects to Beloved extremely well. We can see how gender roles play a part in both works. With Marji being expected to wear certain clothes and act a certain way due to her gender just like Sethe was supposed to fulfill a certain role due to her gender. We can also see how their environment played a part on the development of their characters. When Marji moves from Iran to Austria we can see just how different life was in Iran for her growing up.
    How does Persepolis connect to our world today?
    Persepolis connects to our world today by showing us the importance of seeing multiple perspectives of world events. It gave me a new idea of what happened during the Iranian revolution compared to what the media in America did.
