At your site, find some who….

1.Can point you to translation services and procedures:

-Loma vista uses the district online translators. The teachers put in a translation order and the document is translated and returned a few days later.

2. Teaches students with identified needs who are taught in the general education setting for at least a portion of the day:

-MTSS (Multi Tier System Support) teacher, Kimberly Krzeminski, teaches kindergarten and first graders for a portion of the day. She helps students who are having trouble with their letters and sounds.

3. Has expertise or responsibility for teaching students identified as advanced or gifted:

-Elizabeth Hogrebe is the gate coordinator at Loma Vista.

4. Differentiates instruction regularly:

-Lucy Zazueta differentiates her readers with reading groups. She uses the Phonts and Pinnell reading level program.

5. Has certification or expertise in working successfully with English Learners:

In kindergarten, ELLs are not pulled out. The teachers use pictures, words and have the Wonders ELL book, but they mainly use sentence frames in class to help ELLs.

6. Has a great reputation for including families:

PTO group is a committee that includes both the principal and a teacher representative. They meet once a month and go over what's going on and what they need to do at the school. They also discuss how they can incorporate families into the school community.

At your site, find materials that…

7. Use assistive technology or general technology:

-The Creativity Lab also known as the STEM Room or STEAM Playground: Students can use iPads and can do digital storytelling. They can use Ozobots and learn how to code. They can use B-bots and Osmo to build using different shapes, such as a parallelogram. They can also use electron snap circuits to build.

8. Provide challenges for eager learners or to increase depth or complexity:

Lucy Zazueta lets her students ramp up their book baskets by choosing higher level books. She also lets them pick different materials such as counters, recken racks, counting bears, and differentiated worksheets. The CGI math method is also used, which inherently differentiates word problems. Students can choose which numbers they want to plug in.

9. Help you arrange the learning space for students who need fewer distractions;

Teachers can use offices which are folders that give each child space to work free of distractions. Students are able to better focus and can’t see the students work next to them.

10. Help you meet the needs of families with limited income:

Andrea Owen is the school psychologist and is on campus twice a week. She has assistants and helps students that have a hard home life. She also tries her best to provide families with any services they need. When teachers think their students need some extra help, they usually refer to Andrea but when a guardian requests help for a child directly to the front office, the child is usually referred to the district psychologist. With the district psychologist, the principal has to be involved as well. The district has 30 days to comply with the guardians request.

11. Help students who are working on clear speech:

12. Pick a need based on your students:

One of our students needs to see a psychologist because of her home life situation. Her Grandma went to the front office in the beginning of the school year to request a psychologist, so this student meets with the district psychologist once a week for a portion of the day. The psychologist helps this student talk about feelings and what goes on at her home.
