"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness."

Batman embodies self-reliance in many different ways, especially due to him never conforming to the normal style of Heroism. He always gets everything done himself and uses his own judgement on the actions he takes. He doesn't act like all other heroes who take fame and fortune for their actions; instead, he fights alone and in the shadows, not allowing himself to be seen as the "good guy," even though he saves people.

"I do whatever it takes to make it
Break through anything I'm face to face with
It's true, you gon' make me lose my patience
'Cause victory is mine and I'mma take it"
"We gonna rise up to the top
We've been through it all..."

This song represents how being self-reliant is to cast aside conformity and ignore what others think you should be, rather than you deciding who you want to be. It also is sending a similar message to that of self-reliance that a person must do things to make themself happy and achieve their own personal victories.

"Else, if you would be a man, speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again..."
"Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world."

Dorothea Dix was a woman of compassion and kindness, yet she was not widely supported or approved of, in fact many people during her time thought her actions were foolish or just pointless. She was misunderstood for simply helping the mentally disabled instead of casting them away to an asylum where they would suffer their entire life. Dorothea Dix saw the humanity and goodness in everyone and couldn't stand to see the brutality towards those who were simply born different, and without the same mental capacity as others.

"The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is
its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs."
