Batman embodies self-reliance in many different ways, especially due to him never conforming to the normal style of Heroism. He always gets everything done himself and uses his own judgement on the actions he takes. This song represents how being self-reliant is to cast aside conformity and ignore what others think you should be, rather than you deciding who you want to be. It also is sending a similar message to that of self-reliance that a person must do things to make themself happy and achieve their own personal victories.

She was misunderstood for simply helping the mentally disabled instead of casting them away to an asylum where they would suffer their entire life. Dorothea Dix saw the humanity and goodness in everyone and couldn't stand to see the brutality towards those who were simply born different, and without the same mental capacity as others.
