An informed consent must include the following elements:

·             Comprehension
·             Competence
·             Voluntarism

They were not notified of the description of risks the research may entitle. In this case, the risk of psychological damage. The subject’s assurance of anonymity and confidentiality was not addressed. In the consent there was an option to withdraw, however there was a penalty involved. An informed consent should include an option to withdraw without penalty or loss of benefits. The consent should have also included a consent to incomplete disclosure as there was information that would be kept from the participants to not form bias.

The human rights of the subjects were violated. The study had no limits or regard for human morality. Although the results of the study give insight to the capability of human cruelty, the information was derived at the subjects’ expense. The subjects who played the prisoners were humiliated and stripped of their integrity causing them emotional distress. Based on the story, the study should have never been approved. However, it appears that professor Zimbardo failed to inform the review board of potential risks and got away with conducting a research that did not follow ethical guidelines. According to the article by George (2016), there are ethical factors a researcher should follow and should be reviewed by an ethics committee. These include: care and protection of research participants, respect for the welfare and dignity of the participants, and whether it is scientifically and or socially valuable. In this case the study did not follow any of them. There is also some controversy that the experiment was a confabulation of professor Zimbardo and his study was never published by a peer reviewed journal. This can make the participants feel like their efforts were in vane and feel like they won’t have any benefit to society.  ]]> 2016-09-16 23:15:52 UTC https://padlet.com/saidyh9041/Bookmarks/wish/124492393 Lesson Learned saidyh9041 https://padlet.com/saidyh9041/Bookmarks/wish/124492408 What we can learn from this study is that research must have strict constructs and guidelines. Ethics should play a key role to protect the subjects. A research study should be conducted in a manner that can be replicated. In this study, the experiment can never be replicated due to the ethical reasons stated above. We also learned that if there is ever a concern or question as to how a research study is being carried out there should be a senior personnel to whom the researcher can address the issues with in order to continue the study with integrity (George, 2016).
