Le Guin uses mood heavily to show the feelings the characters had in the false utopian society. The author supplies details about this corrupt society to show mood in the following example. "Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting." This quote shows part of the corrupt society. The author also shows an emphasis on mood with a display of sacrifice. A nameless child only referenced as a "thing," is kept locked in a room deep in someone's basement. It pleas, "I will be good" but no one dares respond. The author alludes that it's only normal experiences are now distant memories. This generates strong emotion in the reader.

Le Guin uses satire to explain the contrasting ideas of happiness. After Le Guin explains the idea of there utopian society she reveals the truth behind there lives. She says "all smiles have become archaic" This shows how without any sadness you cant know true happiness. "happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary..." In this quote the satirical tone introduces whats wrong with there society. These people are getting there happiness from a childs mysery.

Leguin uses contrasting imagery to create a vision that appeals to everyone. Leguin sets an example of contrasting imagery when she writes, "Now do you believe in them? Are they not more credible?" this contrasts to the joy and happiness of the people by questioning their lifestyle. Leguin writes this in hopes of making the reader(s) question the Omelas people. She creates a negative reflection on the Omelas people after talking of their Utopia. When Leguin writes, "The terms are strict and absolute; there may not even be a kind word spoken to the child." this attracts negative feelings toward the Omelas people. This contrasts the idea of a perfect Utopia.

Ursula LeGuin uses pathos to create the illusion of happiness that people always seem to want. By stating how some are feeling in this "perfect" town, the readers see how unperfect it really is. By stating, " They were not simple folks...we don't say the words or cheer anymore." This shows the reader that even though they have everything they want, they aren't very cheerful. This is important because it shows having everything can only keep you happy for so long. This town is not as perfect as it seems to be. She also states the problems in this perfect society by saying, "Often the young people go home in tears, or in a tearless rage." By saying this the audience sees the flaws in a perfect town that is supposed to have no problems. This is important to show no matter what anything and everything has its issues.

By introducing a horrific setting, LeGuin creates emotion to build empathy with the reader. LeGuin describes the cellar and how frightened the child is down there all alone. She says, "...can remember sunlight and its mothers voice, sometimes speak. 'I will be good," it says, "Please let me out. I will be good.'" The tone creates an ominous feeling inside. It gets the readers to realize how scared the child is. This creates emotion by getting the readers, who may or may not have children of their own, to generate feelings that would correlate with parenthood.
