When Eriko feels or experiences pressure or being uncomfortable, it shows that she is quite prone to being self-conscious and trying to put the blame on anyone else. I think throughout the story there was a lot of character development that Eriko faced. At first I perceived Eriko as selfish, insecure and mean especially when it came to her behaviours towards Meeho. As well as projecting her insecurities onto to other people of the same ethnic background as her, Japan. This is evident when Eriko meets a male individual at a frat party who advised her that she had the accent of a Japanese and she got aggravated or when she goes to a boarding camp in Japan and her dorm mates inform her that she is clearly from Japanese origins even though she insists she is American. Another character trait that I notice in Eriko is that she constantly shifts her perspective on her true ethnicity. This is palpable when Eriko in in school and in college and constantly transitions her views about her ethnicity such as when she does a project with Miko about Japan or when she went to a Japanese festival, she felt prideful about her Japanese culture, meanwhile in school she constantly reminds her peers that she is in fact American and refuses to accept the fact that she is ethnically Japanese. Lastly, a character train that is present in Eriko is how she is a follower. Eriko noted the popular girls ranking out the new Japanese girl in the class, so Eriko distanced herself from her and additionally made fun of her to potentially gain the trust of the popular girls and for the popular girls accept her.

She made fun of Minho to cover up the fact that the way she saw Minho was probably the way others saw her. But she was still insistent on being different, stating that she wasn't like Minho. One character trait that I notice in Eriko is that she is very self-conscious, not only in her actions towards others, but also in finding herself questioning where she really is from at the end of every conversation. The way she acts, agitated and humiliated whenever she is confronted with her Japanese origin, really demonstrates the influence others have on her. Which also makes others question why she calls herself American. Why is she not pleased with her culture? It might be the language barrier or the disconnect with her culture that causes her to twitch at the question," Do you know how to use chopsticks?". But it is therefore not a reason for her to be unfriendly or hateful towards Miho because of her

" Japanese stereotype". Towards the middle of the story, Eriko develops a sense of content after a successful class presentation about Japan, until that is broken by the mention of a classmate's family passing at the Pearl Harbor incident.

As the story progressed towards the end, Eriko sensed a feeling of calm and gratitude towards her culture and origin after a family celebration back in Japan, where she stated," I could feel the celebration in my bones".

One attribute that Erico has evolved is being assertive. During the story when Erico and Miho are assigned to do a presentation together about Japan, she feels confident and is starting to feel more open about the culture. This is short lived as a boy from her class asked her about her opinion about Pearl Harbour and she immediately became sheepish as this question was aiming towards which side she took. Another incident is when someone asked her why her accent sounded Japanese to which she quickly replied in a more heavier Minnesota accent trying to fit in. This made her feel more insecure as people would look at her and hear her talk and immediately judge that she was from Japan- or at least this is what she thought. She tries harder to fit in only to realise that people are okay with viewing her as a Japanese American and not only American. She outgrows her fear and strives to be more confident, this is shown when she is dancing with traditional clothes at the Japanese celebration and remarks "I can feel the tradition in my bones." This states that she is slowly embracing her identity after hiding it for numerous years. The tradition was always inside of her however, she is trying to accept that being Japanese might not be as bad as she thought. She goes from being uneasy and self conscious to confident and this change marks a new era for her.

In the beginning I think Eriko was feeling quite disloyal to her Japanese background (she changes throughout the story) as whenever asked where she's from she would reply "America" in a heartbeat. Another point of her disloyalty is showed is when her teacher has assigned her with a Japanese student to help her get around, her first instincts were: why am I put with her, she's a "real" Japanese, and she's weird. Towards the end when Eriko had been paired up with Miho to share about culture and this time Eriko wasn't as unhappy. After Eriko had shared a couple of words to her classmates she finally started feeling comfortable with her origin until, someone and slightly bursted her bubble by saying "My grandfather died in Pearl Harbor". These ideas all changed when Eriko had attended an authentic festival with many dancers, food, music etc. At this point Eriko had started realizing that she doesn't "belong" to Japan nor Minneapolis but rather to all her memories. At long last, Eriko is now more open minded and more accepting to Japan.

Every time someone asked where she was from, she would immediately say she was American, but as the story went along, she realized that when people asked that, they were looking for her to say Japan based on the way she looked. She always denied being Japanese; for example, when she had a project with Mihoe, they picked Japan, and although they were proud of their work, one of their classmates pointed out Harosheema. One character trait that I notice in Eriko is that she is very compassionate about being American and not Japanese. She is also very stubborn about the fact that she is Japanese and insecure about being called Japanese by others. She was very creative when she made a project with Miho about pearl harbor and the atomic bomb.

One character trait I notice in Eriko is that she tries to act like someone she really isn’t. For example, when she was dealing with Miho, she didn’t treat her the right way even though they were both from the same country. Instead of being herself, Eriko tried to act like the other kids just so she could fit in.

One character trait I noticed in Eriko is her selfishness. This is shown in the way she treats Miho, the new Japanese student at her school. When Miho left to go to Japan Eriko’s mom told her it was because she had been mean to Miho. Instead of feeling sorry Eriko said she was glad Miho was gone and even called her a freak, which was very hurtful. Eriko acted this way because she was afraid her American friends wouldn’t want to hang out with her if she became friends with Miho. So, she started bullying Miho and saying mean things. She didn’t care about Miho’s feelings, she only cared about staying with her American friends. Even though she didn’t say it out loud deep down Eriko knew she had made the wrong choice. She felt guilty but her fear of being left out made her act selfish.
