Reflection is a combination of written/verbal and visual evidence that the students have been thinking about their own and their peers learning. Examples might be as simple as a comment about a piece of work in their Learning Journal or it could be more complex such as student creating their own rubric to self-assess a piece of work. For the less independent students it has been helpful to share a google doc that allows the less competent students with prompts and ideas on what they might reflect on. I also try to build in opportunities for students to think about what has been working and what has not and use this to set individual learning goals to enhance their social skills and academic needs.

*I would like to try and do more reflecting but devote less time to each individual reflection.

It looks like all sorts of things. A formal reflection at the end of a unit or big chunk of work. Turn and talk at various points during the day. Notes to your future self during writing workshop. Plenary or wrap ups at the end of lessons. A reminder of what we did at the beginning of the lesson. This is an example of a reflection at the end of a unit. I gave them the questions to answer.

Lots of levels and types. How well did I learn this. How did I learn? What works for me? How can this inform me as a learner and me teacher of what to do next. Time is very important. What do we reflect on as risk of over load? Time needed to assimilate. Does their learning stand the test of time. I find children are pretty spot on with self reflection when it is introduced and managed positively.

I was reminded <gs id="335df113-510c-4c32-ba81-6712fda3dc60" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="ae432405-bfd2-4d72-a73a-f7b970e6df52" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">by</gs> Hugh's comment about reflecting upon <gs id="3b38115d-b9f2-450a-b97e-db7cba0f1ccd" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="ae432405-bfd2-4d72-a73a-f7b970e6df52" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">previous lesson</gs> at the start of the next lesson.

Keep using exit questions and doing what <gs id="4aabac98-6c8d-47a1-a7e0-c82c8528953e" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="dd62cf15-ab1c-47b2-b279-80a8d65c8785" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">i</gs> am <gs id="f0eb16f7-6a52-4032-abf7-37e46f0acfa8" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="dd62cf15-ab1c-47b2-b279-80a8d65c8785" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">doing but perhaps</gs> <gs id="2015add2-1d13-455f-9026-780a8c8cb50e" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="dd62cf15-ab1c-47b2-b279-80a8d65c8785" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">more awareness</gs> <gs id="0cde4579-cd83-4659-91ab-0c4dccf453bd" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="dd62cf15-ab1c-47b2-b279-80a8d65c8785" class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark">by</gs> the students when they are doing it.

I got a great idea from someone else who shall remain nameless (Cath Butler) that

you can reflect on your present practice and to then carry on with this skill next time,

you could leave a note for your future self about this skill. (ie today I did a really good

job of using end punctuation in my writing to make it more expressive) If you write a

post it to your future me, then the next day, when you read the post it, you remember

the note and it makes you try and do the same again.

You could also leave notes to talk about skills and attitudes you managed to achieve

during a certain assignment and how you could do that in your next piece of work

Think I'll have a go at this.

It can be a conversation between students and/or part of a peer assessment process. A class discussion about what was covered/learnt the day before or a one to one teacher/student conference. Students reflect by writing or by using Explain Everything to show their thinking -particularly with Math strategies. They record themselves one to one and in groups discussing their work. I think I need to ensure that reflection is happening in a more explicit way, such as adding comments to Learning Journals more consistently.

I think children are reflecting without realising it. The types of reflections we do throughout the day are usually discussion based. Some reflect better than others so sometimes having to get the child to produce evidence is necessary. I like it when the children can reflect on another child's work in positive and constructive ways. The articulation of their ideas and feedback show the level of understanding of certain concepts.

I definitely think we reflect much more with the children than we think. The conversations I had this afternoon highlighted to me that I reflect regularly and often but sometimes it is a very quick process with no visual evidence but other times it is longer and visual/recorded. I think it is important to have a balance.
