         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>John Hammond said of Holiday, "She was the first girl singer I'd come across who actually sang like an improvising jazz genius."  In 1944, Holiday received </strong><strong><em>Esquire Magazine's</em></strong><strong> Gold Award for Best Leading Female Vocalist. She would go on to receive similar awards in the following years. Baltimore sculptor James Earl Reid created the tall bronze statue of Holiday which makes me think people loved her so they made a tall bronze statue. In 2008, $76,000 was spent to restore Holiday's statue in Baltimore, according to the </strong><strong><em>Sun</em></strong><strong> people loved her so much they spent a lot of money on her. Postal Service honored Holiday with a stamp on Sept. 18, 1994.<br></strong><br></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>
