Working on a cardiac unit with constant alarms and bells create an environment of chaos.

In most circumstances, I believe open notes would be beneficial for patients. It's important that we hold our clinicians to a high standard and that there is no judgment in their narrative. When it comes to a new diagnosis or a plan change, I also believe that it is important for the provider to have a face to face first. We do not want our patient's finding disinformation on the internet or misunderstanding the management plan.

There is misinformation and preconceived notions all around us. If we can look at the data and give the numbers meaning, we can make informed decisions. Unfortunately, there are some people that draw their own narrative from the data. This easily digested narrative could be misconstrued and used against the greater good of mankind. I believe change for healthcare in the US is at our fingertips but we are all small pieces of the puzzle. A person that can look at the data objectively could tell a narrative to the nation's decision makers that it is in their best interest to invest in the poor, vulnerable populations.

Data visualization is the next step for our patients to become empowered to take control of their health. Imagine if a patient could input their health data and compare themselves to other people their age. Also, imagine a formula that a patient could play with to see where they need their "numbers" so they can predict their long term health. Data visualization could bring a whole entire level of health comprehension and inspire the patients to adopt new behaviors.

Small mistakes or holes in our systems can have deleterious effects on our patient's health. It's also important to note that although EHR systems can be beneficial, they can not replace our critical thinking.
