In the upper grades we also participated in a socratic seminar after to really further explore the meaning behind our cultural frame of reference experience. (democratically establishing shared expectations for class discussion helped as well). I think this helped to create a safe environment for students to express who they are and value the experiences and perceptions of their peers. Further, I like to include texts from a variety of narratives to help broaden our students sense of empathy. After attending teachers college Social Justice Saturday, I have also begun to curate a library rich with texts that are culturally responsive. I look forward to using them with the students.

An easy way to talk about family culture is to listen to kids talk about the foods their parents pack and help them feel better about eating foods that look and smell different.
