In reading The Literacy Teacher's Playbook the author, Jennifer Serravallo did an excellent job at paralleling teaching literacy to how athletic coaches prepare athletes for "the big game". The author expresses the importance of taking the necessary steps for students (learners) to reach their goals in literacy. The is power in data and assessments when used effectively. Jennifer reinforces how to analyze students' work by collecting it, interpreting data, establishing a goal, and then creating a plan. The book is broken down into four chapters as there is four quarters in a game.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!!! In teaching math I found just how helpful an engagement inventory is when it comes to analyzing data. Seeing how students behave during reading was eye-opening. Also to see how much information can be gathered from a book log was enlightening too. The image that stands out the most was the example of the student's book log in the book and how we as a staff was able to explain what information can be gathered from the log as we pulled out strengths. It's important to not always focus on a student's weakness but how can we build on their strengths.
