These were definitely taken for granted but without them translating would have been so much more difficult. The books provided vocab and grammar and cultural topics on each page. In the back of the Caesar book they had a summary of each chapter along with a list of frequently used vocabulary words. Advice to incoming AP Latin students would be to definitely use EVERYTHING the book has to offer. It was not until a few weeks before the AP exam that I looked in the back of the Caesar book and I'd only wished that I looked sooner. Ideally, you'd want to study translations from class every night. However, because it is an AP class and obviously more vigorous than self-paced it is up to the student to develop their own deadlines for studying. Unfortunately, I was not very good at holding myself accountable. 
In order to overcome this struggle I began telling others about my daily goals were, and I began writing reminders for myself. I also would study Latin as my first homework assignment when I got home. In Self-Paced, you do not have a teacher constantly reminding you to study nor a soon impending test date. It is up to the student to drive themselves to success. Thus I was forced to learn how to create my own deadlines and to hold myself responsible for finishing assignments. 
At the same time, I also learned the benefits of having an accountability partner. For all 3 years of self-paced Latin I have worked with a partner. We held each other accountable with our assignments so that neither of us would fall behind, and we could meet our Latin goals. The following attachments are examples of my translations from freshman year up to AP Latin junior year. 
Everything about the AP translation is more complex from the culture, to the grammar, to the vocabulary. Initially I signed up for the course solely to better prepare myself for the SAT but it has done so much more than that. Latin has expanded my vocabulary in ways that I can't even recognize. There have been several occasions in my other classes when we had vocabulary tests and I was able to define the words based off of my Latin knowledge. Latin has helped me in biology, english, history, and french on more than one occasion. 
While Latin is a "dead language" per say because we do not speak it, studying the language brings the aforementioned benefits. And studying great leaders and poets like Vergil and Caesar provide insight into the great influencers of Western civilization. Works that need to be studied in its original language in order to truly grasp the meaning of the work.
