She talks about how people are created from women and how women can be just as successful as men. She gave her view on how people thought of her and told her story of how almost all of her children were sold off to slavery and how upset she was to watch that. This applies to 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' because Janie was always hurt by men and looked down upon just because she's a woman. The writing tells us about how women can do just as much as men, which is what Janie seems to fight about a lot in the book. Janie confronts some of the men that Jody was friends with about how to treat women, since they were making fun of a woman who was trying to find food. I think what the author was portraying is the fact that some people wish to do things but are trapped in maybe thought, or another person is keeping them from doing it, or maybe even little self confidence. The bird wants to sing and fly away but his wings are clipped and his feet are tied to the cage so he can't. I think this poem relates to 'Their Eyes Were Watching God" because Janie feels trapped while being married to Jody. Jody doesn't let her take her hair down from a hat, he constantly hits her and doesn't let her do much as it is. She wants to be free and be able to do the things she wants but since Jody won't let her, she is stuck doing what Jody says. She talks about how she feels being in public and how people treat her wherever she goes. The author also said what she experienced one time inside of a coffee shop, and felt racially discriminated against. She tells us how hard it is for her to deal with all of it, and how sometimes thinks about moving down South. I think Janie from 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' because she was discriminated a lot for being a woman and felt really alone all the time due to no one really wanting to be around her because of Jody. She heard people making jokes about the way she packed tobacco and how she did certain things around the house. It tells us the requirements to be a perfect house keeper, cook and wife. If you didn't do what you were supposed to do then you weren't a lady and a good wife. I think this story relates to 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' because Janie needed to be the perfect wife to Jody otherwise there would be consequences for not doing her daily chores. Janie was required to make meals and keep the house clean everyday, which she did to be a good wife. Even though Jody wasn't nice to her she still had to always sit there with a smile on her face and be polite and respectful. It tells us about the different types and how far back white privilege goes in time. It explains what people think white privilege is and what it did to people back in the early 1900s, and how it is used today. This relates to 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' because of the way African Americans were seen in the story and how they portrayed in the story. Janie sees hatred towards her own race even though she is not white or any other race. Her life was a lot different due to her race because white women were out doing other things with their husbands while she was stuck at home as a house wife not being able to do anything. The author, Zora Neale Hurston, sees racism as a disease in a way, and sees no interest in the pigmentation in our skin which is why she didn't say much about whites in the story. Though she didn't say much, she did talk about how Janies grandmother was raped by a white man.
