Missouri wanted to be a slave state which would upset the Senate balance. Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise. Maine would become an independent free state and Missouri a slave state which helped keep peace in the country.

It benefited both because in the North Maine became a free state and slavery was banned in most territories.while in the South it allowed Missouri to be a slave state.

I think the Missouri Compromise was just a temporary fix. It kept peace for a while but it showed how divided the country was over slavery. It didn’t really solve the problem , it just delayed the civil war .

In 1844, James Polk won the election by believing in Manifest Destiny. After his win, Texas joined as a slave state and the U.S. settled the Oregon Territory dispute with Britain, gaining more land.

I think it benefited both regions. The South gained Texas as a slave state, while the North gained the Oregon Territory, which was mostly free land.

I think this event made the divide between the North and South bigger. It added more land but also brought more tension over slavery, which led to the Civil War.

John Brown an abolitionist believed God chose him to end slavery. In 1859, he attacked Harpers Ferry, Virginia to start a slave revolt by seizing weapons. The plan failed, and Brown was captured by U.S. troops led by Robert E. Lee. He was tried for treason and hanged. Many abolitionists saw him as a martyr.

The North benefited in the sense that Brown became a martyr for the abolitionist cause. The South however became more fearful and protective of slavery after the raid.

John Brown's raid was a moment that showed how divided the country was over slavery. Even though the raid failed it made many in the North more determined to end slavery , while it made the South more fearful and defensive. It played a role in leading to the Civil War.

After South Carolina left the Union President Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter. The Confederate army attacked the fort on April 12, 1861 starting the Civil War. Lincoln asked states for soldiers to stop the rebellion, and other Southern states had to choose if they would join the Confederacy or stay with the Union. Some states, like Virginia, joined the Confederacy, while others, like Maryland and Missouri, stayed loyal to the Union.

The South benefited because they fired the first shots starting the war and gaining more states to join their cause. But the North also kept important states loyal to the Union which was important for the war effort.

I think this event was the turning point that made the Civil War start.
