Prescribed to treat anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, and seizures, they are highly addicitive. Benzodiazepines are the most commonly prescribed forms of all the major and minor tranquilizers and among the most abused.

The psychological effects lie in the brain.  BZDs target specific receptors in the limbic region of the brain rather than the depressing activity throughout the entire CNS. Therefore, the drug produces it's intended effects without side effects like impaired thinking and judgment, and serious respiratory depression.

The physical effects lies in the body.  When properly used, BDZs can treat anxiety, help with sleep problems, muscle strains, and seziures.  However, when abused and over used, BDZs can cause fatal respitory suppression.  It can also cause some degree of memory loss called anterograde amnesia which is a form of amnesia that involves the formation of memories after a specific event; just like an alcohol blackout.  When seriously abused, withdrawal can cause 
delirium that is life threatening. In severe cases, seizures, visual, tactile, or auditory hallucinations may occur.

 Rohypnol "paralyzes" its users. It starts to effect the person 30 minutes after taking it, and peaks at two hours. The person may experience the effects for up to 12 hours. More effects include loss of muscle control, confusion, drowsiness and amnesia.
Psychological effects:
The most common psychological effects of rohypnol include depression and anxiety. As shown by the mental and physical effects of consumption, barbiturates are dangerous when abused. Barbiturates create addiction and alter a person's personality to be irrational, afraid, and slow. Furthermore, the more extreme physical effects of drugs on people include kidney failure, coma, and death. The main idea is that abusing barbiturates is very dangerous.

Tranquilizers suppress the central nervous system's (CNS) activity—the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves- thus called CNS depressants. Used primarily to treat insomnia as well as anxiety disorders, tranquilizers are among the most frequently prescribed—and abused—psychiatric medications in the United States. The FDA estimates that over 60 million people receive prescriptions for tranquilizers every year.


Tranquilizers act mostly on the brain by affecting the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Although the various classes of CNS depressants work in various ways, it's ability to increase GABA activity (thereby decreasing brain activity) ultimately produces a drowsy or calming effect that is beneficial to those suffering from anxiety or sleep disorders.

1950, effective drugs for the treatment of psychotic patients were not available.   

This changed in the 1940's when Reserpine, an alkaloid, and the active ingredient of Rauwolfia serpentina, the Indian snakeroot, was found as the basis of the first major tranquilizer. Reserpine was used in the treatment of snake bites, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Rauwolfia was long used in India for the treatment of mental illness (especially paranoia and schizophrenia) and known to medicine men and locals as the "insanity herb." When the knowledge came to America, Reserpine replaced induced insulin shock therapy (injecting patients with insulin until blood sugar levels fall so low that the they become comatose), electroconvulsive (ECT) therapy (inducing seizures by passing an electric current through the brain), and lobotomy (making an incision in the lobe of the brain) as treatments for certain types of mental illness. Ultimately, knowledge about the Reserpine was the gateway for the creation of other similar alkaloids that were later used as major tranquilizers.
