MacFarlane, was arrested on the suspicion of human sex trafficking, unlawful sexual activity with a minor and many other crimes. A document stating his charges said that he picked up the 16 year old victim and sexually assaulted her. He also is said to have drove her to Colorado and Wyoming and try to use her to make money by having her offer sexual activities to truck drivers. He was charged with felony charges of aggravated human sex trafficking, human trafficking of a minor, rape, object rape and many other charges.

In New Jersey the Human Trafficking Force found ways to identify victims and signs of trafficking. In 2007, the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force was formed and aimed to create heightened law enforcement and victim service presence in the community.

The FBI enforces the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The FBI, along with the Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, created the Lost National Initiative. Human sex trafficking happens when a pimp traffics young women or men completely against their will by force or threat of force. In the United States, 293,000 children and teens are at risk of becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation. On average, girls first become victims of prostitution at 12 to 4 years old.
