Gil Gonzalez de Avila was a Spanish conquistador. He sailed into Nicaragua and it was said that he named what is now Nicaragua after a local indian chief. The chiefs name was Nicarao.

20 years after Christopher Columbus was known to have reached what is now Nicaragua, the Spaniards arrived in 1520. 2 years after the Spaniards arrived, Davila arrived to Nicaragua. He arrived in an area that later was known as Rivas.

Gil Gonzalez Avila shaped world history when he became the first European to discover what is now present day Nicaragua. His findings of Lake Nicaragua and Managua brought into existence two of the most popular and beautiful landmarks of the country. If it wasn't for his conquest, these two beautiful lakes may be been undiscovered.

If it wasn't for Davila venturing into what is now Nicaragua, my ancestors may have not been founded and possibly be unknown. This discovery created a path for my ancestors and me. I am proud to be Nicaraguan.

In 1524, Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, founded two important Nicaraguan cities. These cities were Granada and Leon. They were the first Spanish settlements established in Nicaragua.

The Spanish entered into NIcaragua in 1520. The first Spanish settlements occurred in 1524, which were Granada and Leon. In 1526, Leon became the capital of the colony.

Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba (who the Nicaraguan currency is name after) founded two of the most important and influential cities of Nicaragua. Granada, is now one of the most visited cities in all of Central America. Leon, which was the second city founded, was destroyed by the eruption of Volcano Momotombo in 1610. It was rebuilt and Cordoba's remains were found in 2000 under the viejo Leon.
