After three more years of fighting, France was able to take full control of southern Vietnam, naming the colony Cochinchina. It took the french an additional sixteen years to be able to control all of Vietnam, Tonkin (northern parts of Vietnam), Annam (central part of Vietnam, and Cochine or cochinchina (southern parts of Vietnam). As they started to invade Vietnam, the reasons of colonizations began to shift for raw resources because of the large abundance of rice, coal, and natural rubber. And under Gov.-Gen. Paul Doumer, in 1987, French rule was directed at all levels of administration, the government with no power. Vietnamese emperors were deposed and stripped of all willings, given to the french. Even after many reforms and concessions through to the 1930s, Vietnamese officials were employed in very low positions with low salaries. On a lower level of Society, commoners were suppressed and abused by French soldiers, and acts of retaliation  would result in death. France exploited goods from farmers, and forced civilians into coal mines and harvesting of natural rubber. To help transportation of natural resources, France built  railroads, highways, harbors, canals, and bridges. Towards the later years of the colony, France forced many Vietnamese people to work in industrialized factories or refineries that produce rice and paper mills, and glass and cement, the largest of factories being the textile factory which "employed" more than 5000 people. Those factories and refineries were made to make more money for high returns for investors and wasn't created to grow the Vietnamese economy.

France had a huge impact on the culture of Vietnam, ranging from foods to languages and architecture. Today many Vietnamese dishes include a popular French-inspired bread called Banh mi.
