ESL students do not grow up in an English-speaking environment, so their ability to read, listen, write, and speak is not as fluent and proficient as that of native English users. Their limit on authentic English makes them pronunciation of English words poorly, and many students lose confidence to speak.

The use of English grammar is a big problem . Because Chinese do not have so much grammar, such as usage articles, as a result, Chinese learners may omit definite and indefinite articles when speaking English. Other grammatical issues are confusing personal pronouns and verb inflection.

1. Practices for speaking English and build confidence

The most important step for ESL students who lack confidence in English is to keep practicing, which will build confidence and improve pronunciation and fluency.

First of all, confidence can build up in a supportive learning environment. This environment should make students feel safe and supported to take any risk of making mistakes during practice. Also, teachers should help students set realistic goals that are acceptable and achievable so students will try to put effort into the goal. Last but not least, don't compare yourself with others, just compare yourself with how you were yesterday.

On the other hand, it is important to keep it frequent to practice speaking for at least more than half an hour per day, and the way to practice is to read some English articles or imitate the dialog in English videos. Equally important, it is necessary to ask the teachers and classmates to give some feedback to make a better improvement.

Grammar stratagies

Effective grammar strategies for ESL students can greatly improve their language skills. First, it’s important to focus on the basics, such as sentence structure, tenses, and articles. Start by explaining key grammar rules clearly and use simple examples. Repetition is crucial, so provide students with plenty of exercises to practice specific grammar points. Visual aids like charts or diagrams can also help students better understand complex rules. Teaching grammar in context is another powerful strategy, as it shows students how grammar works in real-life situations, making it more meaningful. Encouraging students to read and listen to English in various contexts helps reinforce grammar naturally. Additionally, it’s important to gently correct mistakes and explain why something is wrong, guiding students to find the correct form themselves. Using interactive activities, like grammar games or group work, can make learning more engaging and fun, allowing students to practice grammar in a relaxed, supportive environment. By combining these strategies, ESL students can improve their grammar skills, build confidence, and communicate more effectively in English.

I really enjoy making funny group projects, for example, making a video but not a poster. I love this kind of project because it is not that boring compared to regular classes, also it can develop and cultivate relevant skills.

For grammar checking and vocabulary memorization, I use ChatGPT, which I find to be the most effective tool, it allows speech input and I don't need to type. For speaking, I use Talk friend, which helps me improve my speaking skills in different situations.

I prefer modern approaches because modern tools can provide personalized learning and we don’t need to learn in the same way and with the same content as others.

I am not actually memorizing verbs, I learned them by watching English videos and switching my phone system settings into English. This filled my daily life with English and I learned new verbs by using them.
