Yes, it was notable because it was a very good invention at the time. It was so good because so many people were dying then from the gas bombs, and having something being made like a mask to prevent you from inhaling the air is very good, and it must have saved millions of lives. 

2. The Consequences were that it saved a lot of lives. A negative consequence was that because these gas masks were created, less people were dying from the bombs, so then people started making worse weapons to go against them to kill more people. 
The gas masks could prolong the war.

3. Because back then it was the first time that people used gas and it killed a lot of people. In WW1 the gas was new and experimental which could be faulty.

The gas mask is historically significant because it represents the turning point in the war where both sides started using gas and killing thousands of people at a time.

It was the only defence available to the deadly gas attach therefore it can be classifies as symbolic.
