It shows a city in the foreground and in the background portrays a beautiful sky with a lot of stars and the moon. On the left of the painting, it leads the eye of the viewer to a image that implies a huge tree.

It conveys a sense of loneliness from the point of the viewer, beacuse he's far away from the city. The stary sky seems to be a reflection of Van Gogh's madness inside of the asylum.
