This character’s name is Duncan and he is from the movie “Dune”. What makes him self reliant is that he is fearless and he is not afraid to do things on his own. In the movie, he locks the door to the other side when the enemies are attacking so his friends could escape. He relied on himself to take care of all of the enemies to help his friends out.

The excerpt states “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.” Duncan trusted himself and his own instincts in his life experience to quickly act and make a decision.

A song that seems to be heavily influenced by Emerson’s excerpt is “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten. This song embodies the idea of believing in yourself despite what others think of you. In the song, it has the lyrics “and I don’t really care if nobody else believes”, and this connects to the quote in the excerpt, “Great men have always done so and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age”, by how both the song lyrics and the quote grip the idea of believing in yourself and trusting yourself despite the social standards and the world around you.

In his time, he encouraged people to think for themselves and question things like the existing order at the time. The authorities misunderstood him and his intentions and had him executed.

Chris McCandless embodies these principles by how he went against society's norms and did what he thought was right and what he wanted to do. Instead of going to work a 9 to 5 job, live in a hotel, and pay for meals, he decided he wanted to be adventurous and live life on the edge. He trusted himself to do it and didn’t listen to what others said or thought about him.
