James Marshall was working on a sawmill until he spot a piece of gold and then another, this happened around 1848.  When the news went around people went by boats and or they went on the California trail. The prospectors were called the 49ers. They would have mining pans, food supplies, shovels, and picks to try and strike it rich. Another way how they got the gold was by selling items that people needed for the gold rush. This is what Sam Brannan did. If people did this they would most likely get more than what the miners got. The gold nuggets were discovered by James Marshall when he was working on the unfinished sawmill. The news was so exciting and so hard to keep in that Sutter had to spread the news. But before he wrote a letter to some of his friends about the gold Sam brannan knew he could strike rich if he sold tools to gold miners. In 1849 Brannan yelled out to many people in san fransisco telling them he had found gold, he proved it by holding a full bottle of gold dust. Everyone dropped what they were doing and starting their trip to Coloma.
