For someone in the depths of an eating disorder, this can be toxic since they compare their body image to those seen on social media. These images are often altered and paint an unrealistic picture of how we think we should look.

From experience and from women that been have treated, triggers often come from posts about weight loss, workout routines, dieting, and the images of unrealistic ideals of body sizes. For example, there are many posts of before and after weight loss photos that may trigger the urge to lose weight by any means necessary.

Though this focused on bullying in a school setting and not necessarily online, these findings indicate a relationship between bullying and the development of disordered eating. It can be inferred that cyberbullying has a similar effect on the mental health of bullies, victims, and bully-victims.

These are primarily found on pro-eating disorder websites, although they have been popping up on more mainstream sites as well. Research has shown that viewing such images results in a lowered caloric intake and lower self-esteem.

There have also been studies that indicate that using social media sites, such as Facebook, puts adolescent girls and women at greater risk for disordered eating. It also places everyone at risk for feeling poorly about themselves and dissatisfied with their bodies.

More research is needed in this area, but it is reasonable to believe that frequent use of social media does affect how a person views themselves.

Body Image in the Media

It’s important to understand the impact of body image in the media. Media and body image is important because we are absolutely bombarded with media images these days and those images have a huge effect on our mental health and the way we see ourselves.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the typical American spends about half of his free time in front of the TV. Television is not the only form of media that influences our body image, of course. We watch movies, see pictures online, read magazines and other periodicals, watch performances by rock stars, see ads for clothing (featuring ridiculously skinny models) and so on. In all these forms of media, we see images of very skinny women.

The average female fashion model weighs about 120 pounds. Meanwhile, the National Center for Health Statistics tells us that the average American woman weighs about 169 pounds. Obviously there is a huge disparity there. Most people probably don’t realize that the average woman weighs 169 pounds, though, because they assume what they see on TV or in the movies is typical. The unrealistic body image in the media distorts reality and leads people to believe they are abnormally heavy when they really aren’t.
Issues of the media and body image are important because of the rise in eating disorders and other disorders related to body image. Certainly not all people with eating disorders have been negatively affected by the media and the media is probably not the sole cause of eating disorders in anybody. However, it is often a contributing factor.

Today it’s a different ballgame. Images in the media are so often digitally altered to display bodily "perfection." Some cultural theorists argue that “macho” movies —such as 300 and its recently-released sequel—send males the message that, if we can make ourselves look like Spartans, our life will be full of conquests, women, and success (and that these are the mark of a “real man”). Joky terms like “manorexia” and “bigorexia,” (neither of which exist as a clinical diagnosis) have entered the pop culture realm.

To be sure, the sensory bombardment of “perfect” bodies has likely lowered the threshold for our collective discontent when we look in the mirror. That is sad and troubling, and it should be addressed. But feeling dissatisfied with one’s body—no matter how common it is—is not the same as having a psychological disorder.

To try to establish a direct and sole connection between media images and eating and body image disorders trivializes the nature—and very serious consequences—of these issues.
