It symbolizes that Lorde sees the holiday as a white cultural holiday. She notices that on that day, there was a lot of things that were colored white. As an African American, she seems to feel like there's no variety and no equality. As the vacation was a graduation present to her, it didn't feel like it. She feels like Fourth of July is a "white" holiday.

She learns that the Fourth of July comes from a tradition of white people and this helps her realize that the world has a strong influence on white people. Lorde doesn't realize the influence that the holiday has on the people and she tries to make sure that as an African American, she does what's best for her culture but knows it's too hard to do so in a world that is greatly influenced by white people in general. She knows that she has to make a stand and that she has to use her voice to change this influence.

I noticed that I am often passive-aggressive in some situation that is minor. In that sense, I relate most to my mother who have plenty of voices to speak for some situations. However, I can be very quiet about some situations such as my father and allow other people to deal with it. For instance, my father had an issue with his fantasy football league where someone cheated to win the championship, Both of us know it was wrong but dad remained silent and tipped that situation to other people in the league where he allowed them to deal with it. If the situation impacts me and only me, I would stand up and speak my opinion, but when it impact other people too, i usually don't care until someone asked me for my opinion on it.

I relate most to my mother who knows that she shouldn't let what people think of her or how people view her drag her down. Most of the time, I do that, I let them drag me down. However, I am continually learning from my mom that I should be the person I want to be and not the person that others want me to be. It's ridiculously unfair for me to adapt to the other's standards when I should live up to MY standards first.

When it comes to the Fourth of July, every person has his or her own memory him or her experience during this special occasion. When Lorde took a trip during the summer to Washington, D.C., she obtained her own memory and meaning of independence. The tone increases from each situation that happens to the family. Lorde shares a story about a young black girl, herself, who struggles to find the answers to why her parents did not explain why things are the way they are or why they do not stand up for themselves.

(P. They wanted Lorde to have a happy childhood, so they decided to shield her from segregation. I relate mostly to Lorde’s parents because I didn’t do that much. I am not sure which grade but I used to be bullied and once it was so bad that I came home covered in mud and a couple of bruises. My mom let me go to that school but I had only relied on one person or just didn’t play with many people so I am usually targeted and most people didn’t care that I get hurt. The teachers didn’t really help because I wasn’t a A grade student, I was barely even passing so the teachers only helped when it was worse but it is amazing on how I stayed sweet than become bitter. My mom didn’t know that people bullied me or said bad things about her because I knew she would overreact or feel hurt about what others said. But nowadays I have people who support me and I don’t have to be a sheep anymore because many people are encouraging me to be better and I am slowly doing that. That is how I grew up and most likely the reason why I am so quiet and my presence can be overlooked sometimes but I am changing and becoming more bold so I bet that in the future it will be hard to disappear because I am going to be successful.
