If my manor is at the bottom of a hill than if it rains I could have a flood. It is that same thing today. If I live at the bottom of a hill in a I could also have a flood. The manor surrounded by water would not need a wall, but the manor on a hill would most likely have a wall and more knights to protect everyone in the manor. Some examples are the laws, the religion, language, and also money. The laws again, can affect how you act in society and the rules you follow.
