In this poem the speaker displays two paths that he has to choose between. The narrator can not decide on the path to choose and describes both just as fair, but one is less traveled. This is an example of choosing the more difficult path when it attains to the American Dream and not taking the easier path or making the easy decision. The narrator then proceeds to describe how he will lie about bravely traveling on the less conventional path, in hopes that he will believe he did one day. The narrator suggests the idea of conjoining the farm, but his neighbor brushes the idea off and continues his independence. Through this theme, Robert Frost reinforces the idea of individualism in the American Dream. Through this representation of peaceful and quiet scenes Frost is able to demonstrate these themes. He says “And that was my long scythe whispering to the ground…Something, perhaps, about the lack of sound” in order to display his belief in hard work and how it can even bring peace to oneself. Frost also exhibits the pleasure of resting after work. He describes it as “the gift of idle hours” explaining how through hard work you allow yourself to gain those times of rest. The speaker says how they were “Withholding from our land of living. And forthwith found salvation in surrender” which helps understand the idea of giving your all to the American Dream in order to achieve your desired success. The narrator also explains how they dedicated themselves to the land before it was fully theirs, a reference to how they were still with England and soon a free country. This reference hints at the idea of working on something even if the success comes in the long run and not the short term. Through this poem which quite literally describes the origin of the American Dream, Robert Frost displays not only his belief in the American Dream, but his knowledge in the history of the American Dream.
