Group 1: School Uniforms Should be Mandatory

Classical Form
Introduction: We are all for mandatory school uniforms.

Background: According to an article published last year, school uniforms were first enforced in 1552 in London. Since then, 20% of schools have enforced uniforms.
Lines of Arguments:

1. Schools uniforms work to diminish economic and social barriers between students

2. 77% of students are bullied because of the way they dress

3. It is time efficient for students because their attire does not distract them. Instead, they can focus more on their studies.

Alternatives: We understand that this is a very strict uniform and maybe a dress code would seem like more reasonable options, but studies have shown that when a dress code is enforced, there are loopholes. Students are more easily able to violate the dress code and also this does not prevent social inequality.

Conclusion: School is for learning and not a popularity contest.

We Should Not Have Standardized Testing in Schools (Group 4)

Intro: We should ban standardized testing in school

Classical:
Background:
- The average student in America's big-city public schools takes some 112 mandatory standardized tests between pre-kindergarten and the end of 12th grade.
- This causes stress unnecessarily

Lines of argument:
- Tests are imperfect, the statistical modeling behind value added is imperfect so it's not a true test of teacher value (the algorithm used for Common Core testing that determines teacher quality is the same algorithm used for growing wheat)
- Countries that do well internationally don't use standardized testing at all or they start much later (Norway and Japan)

Alternatives:
- Midterms and finals on a class by class basis with test approval from admin
- Have fewer standardized tests

Conclusion:
- Standardized testing doesn't properly assess student knowledge or teacher competence therefore it's unnecessary

Rogerian:
Introduction: understand the need for a uniform standard in which to measure schools/students/teachers by; problem is it doesn't really work

Context: previous standardized test policies have proven to be ineffective, and it's really expensive to develop these tests

Author's position qualifies own view: we won't have a completely uniform student knowledge base, but not all students should know everything

Benefits: the level of education will not go down because of a lack of standardized testing, students will value education more, teachers can concentrate on their strong suits

Introduction: Michelle obama quote from DNC 2016

Background: 1787 the constitution excluded several groups from the right to vote in a country that promised democracy. it was exclusive to white men. since then weve progressed and the groups that were once exempt now have the most to lose. these people now account for the majority of the U.S. (stat about demographics).

Lines of Arguments: it is mandatory for all U.S citizens above the age of 18 to vote.

economic benefits that were brought by the voting right act.

political literacy for the country.

Classical Form: Topic: We should legalize physician suicide

Introduction: You ever wonder why your physician is allowed to save you, but not allowed to assist in your suicide? Don’t you think that’s strange?

Background: This discussion dates back to ancient times. In 1870 the first recorded suggestion to intentionally end a patient’s life was made by Samuel Williams. As of right now Oregon, Washington, California, and Vermont are the only states who allow physician assisted suicide.

Proposition:

· In a case of terminal illness, when death is imminent and health personnel admitted loss of hope for recovery- the patient should be allowed to terminate their life with the physician’s assistance.

· There is a difference between physician assisted suicide and physician aid in dying. The prior is when a medical third party administers the lethal dose, in the later, the physician aid in dying, the patient self administers the lethal dose. Is this preferred?

Proof:

· 991 patients have been legally assisted in suicide, 77% had terminal cancers

· Median age was 71

·

Refution:

· There is a difference between physician assisted suicide and physician aid in dying.
