Rhyme Time

“I am thinking of an animal that rhymes with big. What’s the animal?” Answer: pig. What else rhymes with big? (dig, fig, wig)

Differentiation:

If a child is none verbal and communicates with pictures, print pictures of items that rhyme with your selected word and pictures of items that do not match and have the child pick the items that match.

Alliteration or “tongue ticklers” — where the sound you’re focusing on is repeated over and over again — can be a fun way to provide practice with a sound. Try these:

For M: Miss Mouse makes marvelous meatballs!
For S: Silly Sally sings songs about snakes and snails.
For F: Freddy finds fireflies with a flashlight.

Differentiation:

If the child is non verbal, say the tongue twister for the child so that they still hear the silly sentences.

Letter Sorting

Sorting letters of the alphabet is a great exercise to help preschoolers identify and differentiate letter names and sounds. Print out letters or use magnetic ones, then help the children to sort them accordingly. You could start with categories such as “curve” and “straight” letters.

Differentiation:

If a child is visually impaired, create this activity using a braille letter chart.

Letter Match

A letter match activity helps to develop recognition of letters and their corresponding sounds. Use matching cards with letters and images and divide the children into two groups. Give one group cards with letters and the other group cards with images. Then ask them to find the person who has the card with the matching beginning letter and image. For example, one child may have the card with the letter "b" and match it to someone else with the image of a ball.

Differentiation:

If a child is visually impaired, cut out braille letters and have the child name the letter and say something that starts with that letter.

Vocabulary Flash Cards

Differentiation:

Differentiation:

If you know your students attention span is shorter than the other kiddos, allow the child to help with turning pages or have a co- teacher sit with the child to ensure that as the child losses interest support is available.

ABC Cookie Cutters

Provide ABC cookie cutters during your art and playdough times. Be intentional about pointing out the letters and add as many or as few as appropriated depending on your group. Incorporate the sounds as you work with the students.

Differentiation:

If you are working with a child that struggles with completing activities because attention is lost quickly, sit with the student, add scents or make brightly colored playdough to hold the child's attention a little longer.

Story Sequencing
