Though I am interested in singing and Eminem is a rapper, he has a great influence on the vocal style I wish to emulate. Rappers are often criticised for being hard to hear and for focusing on the speed of their delivery rather than clarity. However, I find that is not the case for Eminem. He is able to pull apart a word to look at its individual syllables and annunciate each one with intent. This technique helps him to create music that is filled with emotion and he inspires me to do the same with my singing.

Trevor McNevan is an artist I have been listening to for many years. The way he weaves different rock and hip-hop genres together to create his own alternative styles has always drawn me in. His musicality often feels very playful and like he himself just simply enjoys music. Even now, though he does not tour and perform anymore, he is still a part of the music scene writing songs for other artists (for example, 'Gravity Falls' for Manafest). His passion, songwriting ability, and talent for blending genres are all an inspiration to me and he is one of the very first artists to encourage me to pursue music (specifically, music production) in the first place.

LL Cool J was a rapper Eminem admired from a very young age and in particular, Eminem has talked about LL Cool J's 'I'm Bad' music video. When describing the video in an interview with Paramount Plus in 2021, Eminem talks a lot about LL's style and swagger and he says that is what drew him in to make him want to rap in the first place. For Eminem, yes, rapping is about lyricism and skill, but it is also about style and over the years, he has worked to craft his own recognisable image (for example, his bleached hair) just like LL Cool J did with his chains (Shadyverse, 2021).

McNevan has always admired artists who are interested in reaching their audiences in a deep way and who want to leave their own personalised mark on the music scene and for McNevan, one such artist is Coldplay (PRS Guitars, 2014). In an interview with PRS Guitars in 2014, on Coldplay he says this, "They’ve created a heartbeat, a soulful connection to their audience that digs deep beneath the surface." In looking at Coldplay's example, McNevan aims to write emotionally resonant lyrics because for him, that is part of the purpose of music in the first place (CrypticRock, 2014).

Eminem had been influenced and inspired by Dr. Dre long before he was signed by him to Aftermath Records (Bozza, 2010, pg. 37). However, since being signed by him, Dr. Dre has continued to be a major influence for Eminem - in particular, with teaching Eminem how to produce music. Eminem would watch what Dr. Dre did in the studio and replicate that for himself and since then, Eminem has gone on to be a major producer for a number of different rappers (Exclusive Interview with Eminem: Crook's Corner, 2020).

Eminem often refers to himself as being a student of music, particularly hip-hop. He studies and admires the works of others so he can improve upon his own skillset. This is seen in the lyrics of 'Rap God' released in 2013 where he says that his music is used to teach others but he himself was the student of artists like Run-D.M.C. In an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music in 2020, Eminem talks about how he always admired the voices of Run-DMC and how they fit together so well as they interchanged different lyrics. Eminem can be seen trying this skill for himself with his own rap-group D12 in the track 'My Band' released 2004. In this track, there is a lot of interplay between the rappers as they pretend there is tension among the group due to Eminem's fame.

Bjork is an artist I have been listening to only in recent years. Her album 'Post' swept me away on a journey the first time I heard it and I immediately wanted to listen to the rest of her discography. Her choices in song melodies and how she chooses to sing is almost surprising, but it sounds beautiful. She blends the pop genre with Icelandic folk music and often experiments with flute and string instruments. For me, she is a perfect example of why the pop genre has value, though the genre is often looked down upon. This is inspiring because the three genres I wish to create music in are pop, hip-hop, and rock.

Bjork has taken note of this and works to achieve similar effects with her own music which is particularly seen is her album 'Homogenic' (Roll, 2018).

She is drawn to the gentle musicality of her work and also to the links to nature, the world and society (Roll, 2018). This influence in Bjork's work brings a peaceful quality to her music, even when there is tension in her songs.

Trevor McNevan is the lead singer for rock band Thousand Foot Krutch who are known for blending different musical styles with their rock music. In particular, McNevan has been influenced by a lot of hip-hop artists as he admits in 2018 in an interview with April from YESHOMEdotCOM. One such artist was A Tribe Called Quest and in 2014, McNevan talked about how he was drawn to their use of sampling and jazz music (CrypticRock, 2014). McNevan said he listened to a lot of those genre fusions from the nineties and it caused him to look at doing the same with his own music, though he always wanted to find a way to make sure his music could stand out from the crowd (CrypticRock, 2014). One of the best examples of McNevan doing this can be seen in the album Set it Off by Thousand Foot Krutch released in 2003 which is a combination of soft rock, heavy nu metal and rap rock.

One of McNevan's earliest and biggest influences was Michael Jackson. This is particularly seen in a song titled 'Flop Culture' where McNevan sings, "When I was young I used to turn up the bass and rock out to Billie Jean and Thriller in my basement" (Augustine & McNevan, 2006). Michael Jackson's influence on McNevan can be seen in McNevan's singing voice which has been described as being very "powerful" and in 2014, McNevan admitted that he partly learned to sing by playing his vinyl of 'Thriller' over and over and "memorising every inch of it" (CrypticRock, 2014).
