Hello all. To begin, I advocate using standardized examinations to measure students' achievement. This might be due to the traditional method that is still in our education system; paper and pen exams are always the first options for teachers to determine their students' comprehension levels. In addition, the standardized exams are firm in a question format and proofread by experts to ensure the questions are relevant for testing. I solely reject the idea that standardized exams are irrelevant due to their limitation in enhancing creativity, we are all humans with different capacities, and we need a set of instruments that can measure us equally.

I agree that standardized tests can be used to measure student achievement in Malaysia education system because it can demonstrate student improvement by taking the same tests over time. In addition, student test scores can also be easily compared to each other to show changes in their academic progress. Next, it also can help a school system compare students from varied backgrounds because all the students took the same test. Thus, it becomes easier to evaluate and score individuals when they are measured against a common standard. Lastly, standardized testing can identify learning gaps in students. This helps teachers focus on students who need more attention, in hopes of getting all students to meet basic proficiency levels and achieve basic skills. It can also guide curriculum choices and give structure for what needs to be taught.

From my reading, i agree that standardized tests still relevant in Malaysia education system to measure student achievement due to several reasons. Firstly, they provide an objective and uniform measurement of knowledge and skills across a wide range of students, schools, and regions. By using a consistent assessment format, standardized tests offer a fair and equitable means of comparing students' abilities, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and pinpointing areas for improvement. Secondly, these tests help establish a standardized benchmark for educational institutions, enabling them to assess their effectiveness in imparting knowledge and adjusting their teaching methodologies accordingly. Lastly, these tests can contribute to accountability and transparency in the education system by providing a clear and measurable indicator of student performance, which can be used to hold schools and educators accountable for their responsibilities in shaping student outcomes.

In Malaysia, standardised assessments were seen to be important. One reason they remain relevant is that they provide a standardised and objective measure of students' academic ability and knowledge across the country. This enables universities and companies to make informed decisions about admissions and job placements by allowing for the fair and consistent evaluation of students from various schools and areas. Standardised examinations assist to guarantee that all students are on an equal playing field and give a consistent benchmark for measuring their academic readiness and ability.

I am not a fan of examinations. Thus, I would rule out the fact that standardization of exams is relevant. However, I can't agree more that this is possibly the best way to test students despite the fact that everyone has different IQ level, which means testing everyone with the same questions and time are not relevant. Some could be good in memorizing which end with good results while some others don't. Everyone is of different levels and standardization in terms of difficulty of questions is not fair, at least that's what I think. But to be logical, we cannot level each of them and differentiate their questions too. Thus, in conclusion, I would have to admit that standardization of examinations is the best option despite a huge hiccup in this system.

I do agree that standardized tests are still relevant. For starters, how would people measure the success of students if the tests are different? In my opinion, it would be unfair to students with harder tests. "Life is not easy" is a tagline we should use. No students should get any special treatment by these unstandardised tests. Not standardizing tests will lead to lifelong effects on the recipients; harder to apply to their chosen universities, the quality of higher education and lastly affecting their job application. Standardization of tests is vital in ensuring students in receiving quality and equal education for all.

Based on what I've read, one of the best sides of standardized testing is comparisons and benchmarks. Standardized tests allow comparisons between students, schools and districts. They provide valuable data for benchmarking performance and identifying areas of improvement, which can be useful for educational policymaking and resource allocation.

But it has a limited scope. Standardized tests typically assess a limited range of subjects, such as math and language proficiency, while ignoring other important areas such as the arts, social sciences and vocational skills. This can result in an unbalanced curriculum and underestimate diverse talents and interests. Then, teaching to the test: An emphasis on standardized tests can lead to a "teaching to the test" approach, where teachers focus primarily on exam-specific content and strategies. This may narrow the curriculum and discourage innovative teaching methods. So it has advantages and there are also challenges that we need to look into.

We can determine the areas where a student or group of students excels or needs more assistance. This information can be used to enhance teaching and learning. Usually for important exams such as SPM, the questions for the test already follow the guidelines; difficulty index and discrimination index which are fair for all the students. So, the test is valid and reliable to measure the level of students' achievement.

This is because, as we all know, standardized tests like SPM adhere to the standards that have been established. Firstly, they provide a way to measure student progress and understanding of certain subjects in a consistent manner. This helps teachers and schools to evaluate areas of strength and weakness in their curriculum, and to identify areas where additional support may be necessary. Additionally, standardized tests can be used to compare a student's performance to that of others in their age group or grade level, which can be helpful for identifying strengths and weaknesses relative to their peers. Finally, some standardized tests (such as college entrance exams) are used as a measure of academic readiness for certain programs or courses of study. Overall, while standardized tests aren't perfect, they can be a useful tool for educators and policymakers alike.
