Y caminaría mis calles, dolorida por una desolación inmensa, como los silencios del minuto siguiente a un disparo. ¿Cuando se nos fue el futuro por un caño?, ¿quién cambio el curso de la fantasía? ¿Y quién nos ha inundado con la realidad dolorosa del resto del país?

Why do we do things in such a way? How do we observe the world? Why do we react in a certain way? Cultural awareness is a transcendental element when we have to interact with people from other cultures.
People see, interpret and evaluate things in different ways. What is considered appropriate behavior in one culture is often inappropriate for another.
Misunderstandings arise when you use a meaning that makes sense in your reality to explain another. For an Italian it is almost automatic to perceive Americans as people who always work, talk about business at lunch and have coffee running on the street instead of enjoying it in a bar. Does this mean that Italians are lazy and Americans are hyperactive? No, it means that the meaning that people give to certain activities such as lunch or dinner may be different for certain cultures.
Misinterpretations occur mainly when we lack awareness of our own rules of behavior and project them onto others. In the absence of greater knowledge, we tend to assume rather than find out what a behavior means to the person involved.
Become aware of our cultural dynamics is a difficult task, because culture is not aware. Since we were born we have learned to see and do things on an unconscious level. Our experiences, our values and our cultural background lead us to see and do things in a certain way.

"Etapas de la conciencia cultural"
Está claro que la reacción hacia las diferencias culturales varía entre personas. Esto fue lo que observó y transcribió Milton J. Bennett en su famoso Modelo de Desarrollo de Sensibilidad Intercultural (DMIS). En el mismo afirma que los individuos, en ambientes corporativos y académicos, lidian con las diferencias culturales en algunas formas predecibles mientras evolucionan en sus habilidades interculturales. Utilizando conceptos de psicología cognitiva y el constructivismo, organizó estas observaciones en 6 etapas de sensibilidad creciente hacia las diferencias culturales.

El supuesto subliminal del modelo es que mientras más complejas y sofisticadas se vuelven nuestras experiencias interculturales, más se incrementa nuestra competencia intercultural. Cada etapa se expresa en ciertas actitudes y comportamientos respecto a las diferencias culturales. Si logramos reconocer nuestra orientación cognitiva hacia las diferencias culturales, podremos desarrollar un plan de acción para facilitar la transición hacia la siguiente etapa.

Las primeras 3 etapas del modelo son etnocéntricas, lo que implica que de alguna manera, se percibe a la cultura propia como elemento central de la realidad:

Etapa 1: Negación de la diferencia

Los individuos experimentan a la cultura propia como la única cultura real. Por lo general quedan perplejos cuando se les pregunta sobre su cultura, simplemente porque no han considerado cómo impacta la cultura en sus propias vidas o en la de los demás. Por lo general, las personas en esta etapa están desinteresadas en las diferencias culturales y buscan aislarse de otras culturas ya sea de manera física o psicológica. Incluso pueden hasta reaccionar agresivamente si alguna diferencia los afecta. En esta etapa las personas dicen:

“Mientras hablemos el mismo idioma, no hay problemas”
“Nunca experimenté un choque cultural”
“Todas las ciudades grandes son lo mismo: muchos edificios, muchos autos, McDonalds”

Lo que necesitan hacer las personas en esta etapa es reconocer las diferencias culturales que no están percibiendo.

Etapa 2: Defensa contra la diferencia

Los individuos perciben a su propia cultura como la más “evolucionada” o la mejor forma de vivir. Se genera una posición dual de nosotros vs ellos, frecuentemente acompañada de

estereotipossimplistas y abiertamente negativos. Las personas que se encuentran en esta etapa se sienten amenazados por las diferencias culturales, por lo que tienden a ser fuertemente críticos de otras culturas, cualquiera sea su interacción con ellas. Esta etapa también puede presentarse de manera reversa, es decir, invirtiendo ambos polos, de manera tal que la cultura propia se denigra y otras culturas son elogiadas sin sentido crítico. En esta etapa las personas dicen:

“Aquellas personas no valoran a la vida de la manera en que nosotros lo hacemos”
“¡Qué sociedad machista!”
“Cuando voy a otros países, me doy cuenta que mi cultura es mucho mejor”
“¡Qué vergüenza mis compatriotas! Deberíamos aprender a comportarnos como en aquel país”

La tarea en la segunda etapa de sensibilidad cultural es comprender y volverse más tolerante hacia las diferencias.

Etapa 3: Minimización de la diferencia

Los individuos perciben a los elementos y valores de su propia cultura como universales, por lo que, a pesar de reconocer ciertas diferencias superficiales aceptables con otras culturas (en comida, costumbres, etc.), piensan que todas las culturas son esencialmente lo mismo.Las personas en esta etapa tienden a asumir que ya no son etnocéntricos, y sobreestiman su tolerancia mientras que subestiman el efecto de su propia cultura. En esta etapa las personas dicen:

“Después de todo, somos todos seres humanos”
“La clave para llevarse bien en cualquier cultura es ser tú mismo, auténtico y honesto”
“No importa de dónde provengan las personas, todos tenemos las mismas necesidades”
“La tecnología está trayendo uniformidad cultural al mundo”

Las personas que se encuentran en esta etapa de sensibilidad intercultural deben aprender más sobre su propia cultura, y deben evitar proyectar esa cultura sobre la experiencia de otras personas.

Por lo general, las etapas etnocéntricas pueden ser percibidas como una manera de evitar las diferencias culturales y suelen ser las que con frecuencia encontramos en nuestros clientes. Cada una presenta sus propios desafíos y si esperamos ser efectivos interactuando con personas de otras culturas deberemos hacer los esfuerzos necesarios para pasar a las etapas etnorelativas. Become aware of our cultural dynamics is a difficult task, because culture is not aware. Since we were born we have learned to see and do things on an unconscious level. Our experiences, our values and our cultural background lead us to see and do things in a certain way.

Sometimes we need to take a step back to realize the impact our culture has on our behavior. In this sense it is very useful to receive feedback from our international colleagues about our behavior in order to obtain greater clarity about our cultural traits.

[citation needed]. According to Jaime Fisher, 1 cultural identity is the sense of belonging to a particular social group and is a criterion to differentiate from collective otherness. Thus, an individual can identify with some or some of the cultural contents of a social group (traditions, customs, values) but - and this is significant to understand the concept of cultural identity since Fisher - within the same apparently homogeneous group there are several identities, since each one of its members identifies with several -not all, nor in the same way- with the indicated components. Multidiversity, then, is that set of possible identities within the same group. The author proposes three basic types of cultural identity and three different types of multiculturalism. Namely, endogenous, exogenous and intercultural. In the first, a minority indigenous group is politically subject to a nation state with Western values. The second is presented in moderately homogenous countries that have accepted immigrants of different races and cultures. And the last one we find when minority cultures coexist with a growing flow of immigrants.

Cultural Competency Model: 5 essential principles

1. Value diversity

Valuing diversity means accepting and respecting the differences between and within cultures. We often assume that a common culture is shared among members of racial, linguistic and religious groups, but this may not be true. A group can share historical and geographical experiences, but their individuals can only share their appearance, language or spiritual beliefs. Our cultural assumptions can lead us to draw wrong conclusions. As people move into new areas and unite with other cultures, a kaleidoscope of subcultures is created within racial groups. Gender, location and socioeconomic status can sometimes be more powerful than racial factors. For example, a Vietnamese couple can emigrate to America and raise their children in a suburban area. As a result of this, the children can identify much more with the Euro-American popular culture than with the Vietnamese culture of their parents. Understanding situations like this can lead to a better understanding of the complexity of diversity.

2. Conduct a cultural self-evaluation

The most important actions to be aware of are usually those we take for granted. For example, physical distance during social interactions varies in each culture. If an employee of an organization routinely touches the arm of the person with whom he is speaking, this may be misinterpreted in some cultures. Such misunderstanding can be avoided if the organization conducts a cultural self-assessment. Each organization has a culture. Conducting surveys and discussions can help your members become more aware of the organization's way of doing things, and can help it adapt to other cultures. This self-evaluation is a continuous process towards cultural competence.

3. Understand the dynamics of differences.

There are many factors that can affect cross-cultural interrelations. The influence of historical cultural experiences can explain some of the current attitudes. For example, Native Americans and African Americans, among other groups, have suffered discrimination and unfair treatment by dominant cultures. The distrust generated by these experiences can be passed on to the next generations of these groups, but be ignored within the dominant culture. An oppressed group may feel distrust of the dominant culture, but the members of the dominant culture may be oblivious to this, or they may not understand it. Organizations that intend to relate to varied cultures, need to be aware of this dynamic if they want to be effective. Remember that organizations can be intergenerational. A group, which 15 years ago worked with an inefficient, culturally incompetent organization, may not know that the group now has the same name, but is in a "second life" - new employees, new board of directors, and a new approach towards work with the community. This means that the organization has work to do, and must be aware of this dynamic in order to be efficient now. The proactive, rather than reactive, attitude toward change generates a synergistic organization. Anticipating changes is a basic dynamic in the development of a synergy. A synergy is more than simple teamwork. It's the magic you get when people are really working together, deeply understanding each other, and totally agreeing on their beliefs and goals, at least as far as their work is concerned. Synergy only occurs if people treat each other with respect and communicate efficiently with each other.

4. Institutionalize cultural knowledge

Cultural knowledge should be integrated into every facet of an organization. Employees must be trained and be able to efficiently use the knowledge acquired. Policies should respond to cultural diversity. Program materials should reflect positive images of all cultures.

5. Adapt to diversity

The values, behaviors, attitudes, practices, policies and structures that make transcultural communication possible, lead to a culturally competent organization. When all cultures are recognized, respected and valued, and those values are integrated into the system, culturally competent organizations can meet the needs of diverse groups.

Bennett observed and transcribed in his famous Intercultural Sensitivity Development Model (DMIS). In it he affirms that individuals, in corporate and academic environments, deal with cultural differences in some predictable ways as they evolve in their intercultural skills. Using concepts of cognitive psychology and constructivism, he organized these observations in 6 stages of increasing sensitivity towards cultural differences. The subliminal assumption of the model is that the more complex and sophisticated our intercultural experiences become, the more our intercultural competence increases. Each stage is expressed in certain attitudes and behaviors regarding cultural differences. If we can recognize our cognitive orientation towards cultural differences, we can develop an action plan to facilitate the transition to the next stage. The first 3 stages of the model are ethnocentric, implying that in some way, one's culture is perceived as central element of reality: Stage 1: Denial of difference Individuals experience their own culture as the only real culture. They are usually perplexed when asked about their culture, simply because they have not considered how culture impacts their own lives or the lives of others. In general, people at this stage are disinterested in cultural differences and seek to isolate themselves from other cultures either physically or psychologically. They may even react aggressively if any difference affects them. At this stage people say: "As long as we speak the same language, there are no problems" "I never experienced a cultural shock" "All big cities are the same: many buildings, many cars, McDonalds" What people need to do in this stage is to recognize the cultural differences that are not perceiving. Step 2: Defense against difference Defense against differences Individuals perceive their own culture as the most "evolved" or the best way to live. A dual position of us versus them is generated, frequently accompanied by simplistic and openly negative stereotypes. People who are in this stage feel threatened by cultural differences, so they tend to be strongly critical of other cultures, whatever their interaction with them. This stage can also be presented in a reverse manner, that is, reversing both poles, in such a way that one's own culture is denigrated and other cultures are praised without critical sense. In this stage people say: "Those people do not value life the way we do" "What a macho society!" "When I go to other countries, I realize that my culture is much better" " What a shame my compatriots! We should learn to behave like in that country "The task in the second stage of cultural sensitivity is to understand and become more tolerant towards differences. Step 3: Minimization of difference Individuals perceive the elements and values of their own culture as universal, for which, in spite of recognizing certain acceptable superficial differences with other cultures (in food, customs, etc.), they think that all cultures are essentially the same. People at this stage tend to assume that they are no longer ethnocentric, and overestimate their tolerance while underestimating the effect of their own culture. In this stage people say: "After all, we are all human beings" "The key to getting along in any culture is to be yourself, authentic and honest" "No matter where people come from, we all have the same needs" "Technology is bringing cultural uniformity to the world" People who are in this stage of intercultural sensitivity should learn more about their own culture, and should avoid projecting that culture on the experience of other people. In general, ethnocentric stages can be perceived as a way to avoid cultural differences and are often the ones we often find in our clients. Each presents its own challenges and if we expect to be effective interacting with people from other cultures we will have to make the necessary efforts to move to the ethnorelative stages.
