The liver bird is the symbol of the English city of Liverpool.Bella looks out to sea to ensure the boats arrive safely into port while Bertie keeps his watchful eye on the city, protecting the citizens of Liverpool. The Liver Bird has been a symbol of the city for over 800 years. It is thought to have originated in 1207 when King John was granted a Royal Charter to register Liverpool as a borough. He needed a unique seal to differentiate documents and sterling from his territory and chose a bird to feature as part of his crest. The birds are made from copper and stand 18ft tall and have a wingspan of 24ft.The coat of arms created for the city in 1797 incorporated a Liver Bird, which has been likened to the cormorant bird.Along with these two iconic Liver Birds, there are over 100 others that can be spotted in the city.
