This is a third-grade mid-to-high level EL student. He is using his thinking bubbles to take notes about a story we read in the class called, The Long Road to Oregon. Most students were able to write their thoughts independently. Prior to this exercise, we read the story and asked the students if the author did a good job of explaining the journey. After we took notes we had the students walk around the building (Missouri to Oregon) and we gave scenarios on a card that the student had to pick. We would stop at each TIGER stop and see if the student survived the trip. Then they had a writing prompt based on the story and their adventure to Oregon (around the building). In your opinion, was it a good idea for people to move to Oregon in then your opinion, was it a good idea for people to move to Oregon in the 1800s?

In my student teaching, there are six ESL teachers and they have divided the groups up depending on levels. Our groups are all intermediate-level EL students. We have not done any kind of flexible grouping, and we are a push-in model. This particular artifact is our 3rd-grade students broken up in their levels and with their teachers. This list was based on their WIDA scores for the new school year.

Our 5th graders did a flexible group science project where students were learning about landforms. This project took about 3 weeks to complete. Students were placed in groups of four based on which landforms they wanted to research and mold. After the students picked there landforms they had to make salt dough island, form it and let it dry. They were required to do six landmines total. Lastly, the students painted their islands and presented to the class. One important part of their learning was researching how each landform works and it’s purpose. How was it formed? Was it caused by nature, or erosion?

Above were the instructions on how to peer edit each paragraph. Students that had a bit more understanding in their writing graded the students that needed a little more practice and walked them through the areas of practice. Below is an example of one of our 3rd graders paragraph.
